Suicide Threat and Garage Standoff: Deputies Stop Domestic Violence Suspect Before Tragedy Strikes
What began as a routine domestic violence report on the evening of August 12, 2025, quickly spiraled into a volatile and dangerous standoff in El Paso County, Colorado. Thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) and the Fountain Police Department, a potentially deadly situation was defused, and 32-year-old Tyler Babb was taken into custody.
### The First Call: A Cry for Help
At 5:30 p.m., EPSO’s Regional Communications Center received a distress call from a resident on Buffalo Horn Drive, near South Powers Boulevard. The caller reported being assaulted in their home. Deputies responded promptly, identified Tyler Babb as the suspect, and issued an attempt-to-locate alert to nearby law enforcement agencies. The victim was urged to call again if Babb returned.
### The Suspect Returns
Just before midnight, at 11:15 p.m., the victim contacted authorities again—Babb’s phone location showed he was near the residence. Deputies instructed the victim to evacuate immediately and rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they saw Babb drive into the garage and shut the door behind him. Patrol vehicles were strategically placed to block any escape route. Fountain Police officers soon joined the effort.
### Suicide Threat and Escalation
Outside the garage, deputies heard the engine of Babb’s vehicle revving aggressively. The victim revealed a chilling message from Babb: he intended to “kill himself by CO2 poisoning.” Concerned for everyone’s safety, law enforcement entered the home through the open front door and approached the interior garage door.
Suddenly, Babb exited his vehicle and charged at the officers. Deputies responded with less-lethal pepper ball rounds to halt his advance. He retreated to his car, opened the garage door, and attempted to flee—striking a deputy’s patrol vehicle in the process. He exited the vehicle again, and officers swiftly moved in to arrest him.
### Medical Clearance and Charges
Babb was treated on-site, taken to a local hospital for evaluation, and then booked into the El Paso County Jail. He faces several charges:
– **Third Degree Assault**
– **Menacing**
– **Harassment**
### ️ Sheriff’s Statement
Sheriff Joe Roybal commended the rapid and unified response:
> “This was an extremely dangerous situation for the victim, my deputies, and the surrounding neighbors. The suspect’s repeated threats and violent actions demonstrate he has no place on the streets of our community. I am proud of the rapid and coordinated response by our deputies and the assisting officers from the Fountain Police Department, which prevented this incident from escalating further.”
### Release and Reflection
Babb was released the following day, August 13, on a personal recognizance (PR) bond. While the immediate threat was neutralized, the incident underscores the unpredictable nature of domestic violence cases and the delicate balance law enforcement must maintain when dealing with individuals in crisis.
