In a deeply troubling case that has shaken the Grovetown, Georgia community, a licensed practical nurse has been arrested following allegations of elder abuse after a 65-year-old bedridden man was left in a dangerous and agonizing position for over half an hour—while his caregiver sat just feet away.

The incident unfolded on Monday morning in a quiet home on the 300 block of Katherine Street, where the disabled man, suffering from multiple debilitating health conditions, relies on round-the-clock medical supervision. According to police reports, the man attempted to reposition himself in bed but slipped—his lower body dangling off the mattress while his upper torso and head remained on it. Immobilized and mentally diminished, he was unable to move or call for help beyond his repeated cries.

Shockingly, Vernieshia Bell, the home healthcare worker assigned to his care, was seated just eight feet away with a clear view of the patient. Despite the man’s desperate pleas for assistance, Bell allegedly did nothing. It wasn’t until another healthcare worker arrived to relieve her that the man was finally helped. What makes the case even more disturbing is that the entire incident was captured on a security camera installed by the family—footage that has become central to the investigation.

When questioned by authorities, Bell admitted she was aware of the man’s condition but claimed she refrained from helping due to back problems and a recent childbirth. She also acknowledged that she could have called 911 but failed to do so, offering no justification for her inaction.

Bell, employed temporarily through Consolidated Medical Staffing, was arrested and booked into the Columbia County Detention Center. She faces charges of Exploitation or Intimidation of a Disabled Adult (Neglect) and was released on a $10,100 bond. The arrest warrant states that Bell willfully allowed the non-ambulatory patient to remain in a compromised position, causing mental anguish and depriving him of essential care.

Grovetown Police Chief Jamey Kitchens issued a public statement urging families to take proactive measures to protect vulnerable loved ones receiving in-home care. “The Grovetown Police Department highly encourages family members or caregivers to install video surveillance equipment if they have a relative or loved one that is receiving in-home medical care or treatment,” Kitchens said.
