Chicago, Illinois mourns Romeca Meeks after South Loop shooting, community grieves while authorities investigate circumstances

CHICAGO — The Chicago community is mourning the tragic loss of 31-year-old Romeca Meeks, who was fatally shot Monday morning in the South Loop near Cermak Road and State Street. Friends, family, and neighbors are expressing deep sorrow while law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the Chicago Police Department, officers responded around 9:35 a.m. on September 8, 2025, after multiple 911 calls reported gunfire in the area. Responding officers discovered Meeks lying in the street with multiple gunshot injuries, including wounds to her chin and thigh.

Emergency personnel transported Meeks to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. Authorities have confirmed that the suspected shooter, identified as Holly Johnson, remained at the scene and was taken into custody. The firearm used in the incident was recovered by police.

Investigators report that the shooting followed a physical altercation between Meeks and Johnson. Officials said Johnson allegedly drew a firearm during the dispute, which resulted in Meeks sustaining multiple injuries. Johnson reportedly claimed to possess a valid concealed carry license at the time.

Family members shared that Meeks had recently dropped off her young son at school and was on her way to work when the incident occurred. Loved ones described her as a devoted mother and a kind, caring individual whose loss has left the family heartbroken.

Witnesses stated that Carlos “Losos” Way, the father of Meeks’ child and subject to an active restraining order, was present during the altercation. According to accounts, Way allegedly placed Meeks in a headlock, contributing to the escalation that preceded the shooting.

The Chicago Police Department emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing. Officers are gathering witness statements, reviewing surveillance footage from the area, and examining physical evidence to determine the full sequence of events that led to the tragic outcome.

Community members and local leaders have expressed grief over the incident and called for calm while the investigation proceeds. Many neighbors have placed flowers and messages near the site, honoring Meeks’ memory and supporting her grieving family.

Authorities have urged the public to respect the privacy of Meeks’ family during this difficult time. Residents are also encouraged to avoid speculation, allowing investigators to conduct a thorough and unbiased review of the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Romeca Meeks’ passing has left a profound impact on her community, highlighting the fragility of life and the importance of support networks during times of tragedy. Family, friends, and neighbors are coming together to honor her memory, celebrate her life, and offer comfort to those affected by the incident.
