Newberry South Carolina: Dexter Gary Shooting and Abduction Investigation Leads to Arrest of David Clark

NEWBERRY, S.C. — Authorities have arrested 53-year-old David Clark of Chapin following a deadly shooting and abduction incident that occurred last weekend in Newberry. Police confirmed that Clark faces multiple charges in connection with the events, which drew swift law enforcement response and community attention.

According to the Newberry Police Department, the charges against Clark include murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and unlawfully placing a child at risk of harm.

The incident was first reported early Friday morning on College Park Drive when officers responded to calls regarding a shooting and a potential abduction. The initial reports prompted an immediate and coordinated response by local law enforcement.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers were required to forcibly enter an apartment, where they discovered 53-year-old Dexter Gary had suffered fatal injuries from a gunshot. Gary was pronounced deceased at the location.

Investigators allege that after the shooting, Clark forcibly placed a woman and a child into a vehicle before fleeing the area. Authorities described the abduction as a highly serious situation requiring immediate attention to ensure the safety of the victims.

With assistance from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, law enforcement officials were able to safely locate the woman and child later that same day in Chapin. Both were unharmed, and police provided support and resources to address the traumatic experience.

David Clark was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Newberry County Detention Center. He remains in custody after being denied bond, pending ongoing legal proceedings and further investigation by the authorities.

The Newberry Police Department emphasized that the investigation remains active. Officers are continuing to collect evidence, interview witnesses, and review all aspects of the incident to ensure a thorough understanding of the circumstances leading up to the shooting and abduction.

Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the Newberry Police Department at 803-321-1010 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Community cooperation is considered vital in assisting investigators and ensuring accountability.

Local leaders have also called for community support and awareness in response to the incident. Residents are being encouraged to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and work with law enforcement to maintain safety in Newberry as the investigation continues.
