Annapolis US Naval Academy on Lockdown After Former Midshipman Shoots Multiple Victims, Authorities Respond

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland — Multiple victims are being assessed after a shooting incident at the United States Naval Academy, according to sources within the Academy. The institution was placed on immediate lockdown after a former midshipman, previously dismissed from the Academy, reportedly returned armed with a weapon, prompting rapid response from authorities.

The incident occurred inside Bancroft Hall, the historic and largest dormitory on campus, which houses the Brigade of Midshipmen. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and described chaos as students and staff scrambled to secure themselves in hallways, rooms, and offices during the unfolding event.

One campus official stated that the armed individual had been “knocking on doors pretending to be a military policeman,” adding to the tension and fear among residents. This behavior delayed immediate identification of the threat and complicated the evacuation and lockdown procedures.

Lieutenant Naweed Lemar, Public Affairs Officer for Naval Support Activity Annapolis (NSAA), released an official statement confirming the lockdown and ongoing response efforts. He emphasized that local law enforcement and military security were coordinating to contain the threat and ensure the safety of everyone on campus.

“Naval Support Activity Annapolis, in coordination with local law enforcement, is currently responding to reports of threats made to the Naval Academy,” Lemar said. “The base is on lockdown out of an abundance of caution. This is a developing situation, and updates will be provided as information becomes available.”

A Defense Department official also confirmed awareness of the incident, noting that the Academy remains under lockdown while details continue to emerge. No further specifics on the identities or conditions of the victims were released at this time.

Law enforcement agencies, including local police, federal authorities, and military security personnel, remain on site as the situation continues to unfold. Their coordinated efforts focus on securing the campus, assessing potential threats, and providing aid to the injured.

Authorities have urged the public and those connected to the Naval Academy to refrain from speculation, avoid sharing unverified information on social media, and await official updates from law enforcement and Academy officials. They stressed that safety measures are being rigorously implemented to prevent further harm.

Students, staff, and faculty have been advised to remain in secured locations until authorities give the all-clear. Counseling and support services are expected to be made available to help those impacted by the traumatic events, reflecting the Academy’s commitment to community well-being.

While the investigation continues, Annapolis residents and the broader Naval Academy community are closely monitoring the situation. Authorities confirmed that additional details regarding the suspect, victims, and any potential motives will be shared once verified, as the focus remains on public safety and emergency response.
