Franklin County, PA — A tense police chase ended in tragedy on Wednesday evening when two Pennsylvania state troopers were critically injured and a suspect was killed during a shootout in Guilford Township. The incident stemmed from a retail theft at a Dick’s Sporting Goods store on Lincoln Way East that escalated into a violent confrontation on Interstate 81.

According to state police, the situation unfolded around 6 p.m. when troopers responded to reports of theft at the sporting goods store. Upon their arrival, the suspects fled in a vehicle, prompting a high-speed pursuit heading southbound on I-81. Officers acted quickly, deploying spike strips to halt the fleeing car near Exit 3 in Antrim Township.

Inside the vehicle were three suspects—two women and one man. The women reportedly complied with troopers’ commands and were taken into custody without incident. However, authorities say the male suspect exited the vehicle and opened fire on the troopers, striking two officers before being fatally shot when law enforcement returned fire.

Emergency medical teams immediately responded, and both injured troopers were airlifted to WellSpan York Hospital. Officials have confirmed that one trooper remains in critical condition while the other is listed as serious but stable. Their names have not yet been released pending family notification.

The incident remains under active investigation by Pennsylvania State Police Troop H’s Major Case Team and the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office. Investigators spent hours processing the scene along the highway, collecting shell casings, examining dashcam footage, and interviewing witnesses to piece together the full timeline of events.

Governor Josh Shapiro released a statement expressing his concern and support for the injured officers. “Lori and I are praying for the two Pennsylvania State Troopers shot in the line of duty tonight,” Shapiro said. “These brave men represent the best of Pennsylvania—running toward danger every day to protect our communities.”

Attorney General Dave Sunday echoed similar sentiments, noting that he had spoken directly with Commissioner Christopher Paris about the shooting. “We join all Pennsylvanians in praying for the recovery of the injured officers,” Sunday said. “Their courage and dedication remind us of the risks every law enforcement officer faces.”

The Pennsylvania State Troopers Association (PSTA) and the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) also issued statements of solidarity. PSTA President Stephen Polishan emphasized the sacrifices officers make daily, saying, “Each day, our troopers go to work knowing they may have to give their last full measure. We can never thank them enough for their bravery.”

FOP State Lodge President Joseph Regan praised the troopers’ response under fire, adding, “These officers showed true heroism. We’re grateful they’re receiving the care they need and stand united in support of their recovery.”

As the investigation continues, Franklin County residents and law enforcement agencies across Pennsylvania are rallying behind the troopers and their families. Vigils and prayers have been organized, reminding the community that behind every badge is a person who risks everything in the line of duty.
