Miami – Two police officers were shot Thursday morning while responding to reports of gunfire in the Allapattah neighborhood, prompting a massive police response and an hours-long standoff that ended with the suspect’s death. Authorities later identified the gunman as 27-year-old Mason Triana, though it remains unclear whether he died from police gunfire or a self-inflicted wound.

The incident unfolded around 7:00 a.m. near NW 17th Avenue and 26th Street, when officers were dispatched to investigate reports of a suspicious vehicle that appeared abandoned in the roadway. According to Miami Police Chief Manny Morales, officers on the scene found no one nearby and called for a tow truck to remove the vehicle from traffic.

Moments later, a ShotSpotter alert—a real-time gunfire detection system—indicated shots had been fired just blocks away. Officers immediately responded to the alert and discovered another vehicle riddled with bullets near the same area. As they began assessing the situation, gunfire erupted once again, catching officers in a deadly ambush.

Police said the suspect, later identified as Triana, opened fire on the officers without warning. Two officers were struck during the exchange. One officer, a male sergeant, was shot in the knee, while a female officer sustained a gunshot wound to the ankle. Despite their injuries, both officers were able to seek cover and call for backup.
