MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A juvenile suspect is now in custody following a deadly mass shooting that shook downtown Montgomery last Saturday. The Montgomery Police Department (MPD) released video Friday showing the suspect being taken into custody, though authorities have withheld his name and exact age.

The shooting occurred near Bibb Street and Commerce Street around 11:30 p.m., a typically busy area in Montgomery. According to MPD officials, investigators believe that one individual was specifically targeted amid a large crowd. Gunfire exchanged between others in the crowd escalated the situation, leading to multiple casualties.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Shalanda “Rena” Williams, 43, was confirmed as one of the two victims who tragically lost their lives in the shooting. Family members described the violent act as shocking, emphasizing that Williams had no history of involvement in criminal activity and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Jeremiah Morris, 17, was identified as the second fatality of the incident. Authorities have not disclosed whether he was an intended target or a bystander. Friends and neighbors of Morris expressed deep sorrow, highlighting his youthful potential and community involvement.

The suspect now faces severe charges, including one count of capital murder, nine counts of first-degree assault, and three counts of second-degree assault. MPD confirmed that the juvenile was booked into the Montgomery County Detention Facility on Friday following his arrest.

Police released a video of the arrest showing the suspect’s legs as he was patted down and placed into a patrol vehicle. The perp walk video serves as visual confirmation of the arrest while maintaining the juvenile’s anonymity. Officials emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are anticipated.

As of the latest reports, twelve people were injured in the shooting. Five victims remain hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, while seven others are recovering from non-life-threatening wounds. Medical teams continue to provide intensive care to those critically injured.

MPD Chief Jim Graboys commented on the complexity of the investigation, noting the challenge of identifying and tracking individuals involved in such chaotic events. He stressed that the department is working diligently to prevent further violence in downtown Montgomery.

Community leaders and residents have expressed outrage over the mass shooting, calling for increased safety measures in public areas. Local officials have announced plans for community forums aimed at discussing violence prevention and support for victims’ families.

Authorities have urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. They continue to review surveillance footage, witness statements, and other evidence to ensure that justice is served for all victims of this tragic event.

The Montgomery Police Department reiterated its commitment to public safety and transparency throughout the investigation. The department plans to provide updates as more information becomes available, promising swift action against anyone found responsible for the shooting.
