Memphis, TennesseeCorwyn Winfield, 26, of Memphis, has been arrested after allegedly hiding in his ex-girlfriend’s closet and threatening her and her new boyfriend at gunpoint. The incident, which occurred on October 25 at a townhouse in the Emerald Square Townhomes in the Hickory Hill neighborhood, involved multiple children and left the community in shock.

According to police, Winfield allegedly entered the townhouse without permission, carrying a black “AR-style” rifle. While the ex-girlfriend, her new boyfriend, and a 5-year-old child slept upstairs, Winfield reportedly concealed himself in the bedroom closet before emerging armed and threatening the occupants. Two other children were asleep in a neighboring bedroom during the confrontation.

Authorities state that Winfield allegedly pointed the rifle at the couple and made threats, ordering them not to move. The new boyfriend attempted to leave the bedroom but was stopped at the doorway, prompting a struggle over the weapon. During the altercation, the rifle was reportedly discharged multiple times, creating a chaotic and dangerous situation.

The ex-girlfriend screamed for help, summoning the attention of other adults in the home who were downstairs. The new boyfriend was ultimately able to knock the weapon to the floor, temporarily disarming Winfield. Despite this, police report that Winfield grabbed the gun and fled the residence, continuing the threat to others in the vicinity.

During the incident, a bullet reportedly struck a neighboring townhouse, which was occupied by a 10-month-old baby, a 6-year-old, and two 17-year-olds. Law enforcement emphasized that the reckless nature of the situation endangered not only those in the immediate home but also residents nearby.

Winfield was later located at a local hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to his arm during the struggle. Officers confirmed his identity and took him into custody, charging him with aggravated domestic violence, aggravated child abuse or neglect, reckless endangerment, and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, as well as aggravated assault and domestic assault.

Court records indicate that Winfield has a prior history of domestic violence arrests. Authorities note that this past record, combined with the nature of the October 25 incident, underscores the seriousness of the charges and the threat posed to the family.

The ex-girlfriend positively identified Winfield as the individual responsible for the home invasion and the threats made with a firearm. Police have emphasized the importance of such witness accounts in building the case against him and ensuring the safety of all involved.

Winfield was held on a $400,000 bond following his arrest and was scheduled to appear in court on the Wednesday after his capture. A preliminary hearing has been set for November 12, where authorities are expected to present evidence and outline the charges further.

The incident has left the local community shaken, particularly due to the presence of multiple children in the home and nearby townhouses. Residents and authorities alike have stressed the importance of vigilance and the need for continued support for families affected by domestic violence, hoping this case brings accountability and a measure of safety back to the neighborhood.
