Spread the News with People

Sacramento County, CA – May 19, 2025 — A somber mood hangs over the American River community today as officials confirmed the recovery of a drowning victim’s body from the popular recreational waterway. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced that the body was discovered early Monday morning following an extensive search and recovery operation launched over the weekend. An investigation into the circumstances leading to the tragic incident is now underway.

Discovery and Recovery

The body was found near the Sunrise Boulevard Bridge, a frequently visited area of the American River that attracts swimmers, kayakers, and families looking to enjoy nature. According to the Sacramento Metro Fire District, a passerby reported seeing what appeared to be a body in the water just after 7:00 a.m. Emergency crews were immediately dispatched to the scene and were able to retrieve the body with the help of the department’s dive team.

The victim, whose identity has not been officially released pending notification of next of kin, is believed to be a male in his 20s or 30s. Authorities say the individual was reported missing late Saturday afternoon after friends he was with lost sight of him while swimming near the riverbank.

Search and Rescue Efforts

Search and rescue operations began shortly after the initial report of the missing swimmer. Teams from multiple agencies, including the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Marine Enforcement Detail, State Parks lifeguards, and local volunteers, scoured the area by boat, drone, and on foot. Despite their best efforts, darkness and swift water conditions hampered progress over the weekend.

“This section of the river can be deceptively dangerous,” said Lt. Emily Perez, spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. “Even experienced swimmers can be caught off guard by the current, submerged debris, or cold water temperatures. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”

Ongoing Investigation

At this time, the exact cause of death has not been officially determined. Investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy and toxicology report, which will be conducted by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office. While foul play is not suspected, authorities are not ruling anything out until all evidence has been reviewed.

Witnesses at the scene on Saturday have been interviewed to help piece together what happened in the moments leading up to the man’s disappearance. According to early reports, the victim had entered the river without a life jacket and was last seen struggling against the current before vanishing beneath the surface.

“We urge anyone who may have additional information, including photos or video from the area on Saturday, to contact our department,” Lt. Perez added. “Even the smallest detail could help clarify what happened.”

Community Response and Safety Concerns

The incident has reignited concerns over safety along the American River, particularly as the summer season approaches and more people flock to the water. Despite posted warnings, officials say many visitors underestimate the river’s hazards, especially after recent snowmelt has increased flow levels.

Local authorities are now calling for renewed public education campaigns about water safety, the importance of life jackets, and the risks of alcohol or drug use near waterways.

“Our rivers are beautiful, but they are not without danger,” said Sacramento Metro Fire Captain Jason Liu. “We’ve responded to far too many preventable tragedies. Please, wear a life vest, swim in designated areas, and never swim alone.”

Looking Ahead

As the community mourns the loss of a young life, first responders and local leaders hope that this tragedy will serve as a sobering reminder of the power of nature and the importance of caution. Plans are already in motion to install additional signage and possibly increase patrols along high-traffic sections of the river.

Grief counselors have been made available to friends and family of the victim, as well as to rescue personnel involved in the search.

The investigation into the drowning remains active, and more information is expected in the coming days as authorities finalize their findings. Anyone with tips is encouraged to contact the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office at (916) 874-5115.

In Memory:
While the victim’s identity has not yet been released, a growing memorial of flowers and notes is forming near the riverbank, a poignant testament to a life lost too soon. Community members have begun organizing a candlelight vigil to honor the victim, emphasizing unity and remembrance in the face of tragedy.
