Baton Rouge Fire Department Investigating Two Vacant House Fires
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – The Baton Rouge Fire Department is actively investigating the cause of two separate fires that broke out in vacant homes early Monday morning, one of which resulted in a total loss. Both incidents have raised concerns within the local community and among fire officials, especially given the ongoing challenges of managing abandoned and unsecured properties in residential neighborhoods.
The first fire was reported shortly before 1 a.m. on Monday, June 2, in the 8200 block of Southern Avenue. According to officials, firefighters arrived on the scene to find heavy flames billowing from the rear of the structure. The fire had already spread significantly by the time crews arrived, prompting a rapid response effort to contain the blaze and prevent further damage.
Firefighters successfully contained the fire to the rear bedroom of the house, but the rest of the building suffered extensive smoke and water damage. Though the structure did not completely collapse, it was left severely compromised, with portions of the interior charred and structurally weakened. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and because the home was unoccupied at the time, there were no rescues required.
Shortly after extinguishing the first fire, authorities responded to a second vacant house fire in the same general area. Details about the location and extent of damage to the second structure have not yet been released, but officials have confirmed that one of the properties involved was deemed a total loss. The timing and proximity of the two fires have led investigators to consider the possibility of a connection, and arson has not been ruled out as a potential cause.
“We are looking into all possible causes, including whether these fires may have been intentionally set,” said a spokesperson for the Baton Rouge Fire Department. “Our investigators are working diligently to determine the origin and cause of each blaze.”
Vacant properties pose a unique risk to neighborhoods, often becoming targets for vandalism, illegal entry, and in some cases, intentional acts of fire-setting. Local residents have expressed concern over the prevalence of abandoned homes in the area, noting that such structures can quickly become safety hazards.
“Something needs to be done about these empty houses,” said a nearby resident who asked to remain anonymous. “They attract trouble, and this isn’t the first time we’ve seen fires in the area. It’s frightening to think what could happen if these fires spread to occupied homes.”
The Baton Rouge Fire Department is urging anyone with information about the fires to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously to the Baton Rouge Fire Investigations Division or through Crime Stoppers. Officials also encourage residents to report any suspicious activity near vacant homes.
In the meantime, the department is working closely with city officials to assess the condition of other nearby properties and ensure that any remaining hazards are mitigated. As investigations continue, authorities remain focused on maintaining safety and preventing future incidents.
