North Farmington High Mourns Loss of Beloved Student Carmelo Tibus, 16, After Tragic Car Accident

NORTH FARMINGTON, MI — A heavy cloud of sorrow has settled over the North Farmington High School community as friends, classmates, teachers, and loved ones mourn the tragic and untimely loss of Carmelo Quiton Tibus, a vibrant and promising 16-year-old student and athlete who passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, following injuries sustained in a devastating car accident.

The fatal crash, which occurred on Monday evening, June 16, shocked the quiet suburbs of Farmington Hills and sent ripples of heartbreak through every corner of the school community. Carmelo, known for his kind heart, quick wit, and infectious smile, was a passenger in the vehicle involved in the collision. Despite the tireless efforts of first responders and medical professionals, the injuries he sustained proved too severe. He succumbed to those injuries the following day surrounded by his devastated family.

Carmelo was more than just a student—he was a light in every room, a motivator on the field, and a loyal friend off of it. A junior at North Farmington High School, Carmelo was deeply involved in school life. He was a standout athlete, a proud member of the Raiders’ varsity soccer team, and often seen putting in extra hours to improve his game or cheer on his teammates. Coaches recall him as a dedicated and coachable player who led by example—humble in victory, gracious in defeat.

Outside of athletics, Carmelo was a bright and determined student with a thirst for knowledge and an eye on the future. His favorite subjects included math and science, and he had dreams of pursuing a career in engineering or technology. Teachers described him as a respectful and curious learner, always willing to help a classmate and never too proud to ask for help when he needed it. His academic success was matched only by the strength of his character.

Friends remember Carmelo as someone who could make anyone laugh, even on the toughest days. He was the kind of person who never let anyone sit alone at lunch, who remembered your birthday even if you didn’t remind him, and who had a knack for making people feel seen, heard, and valued. His presence was magnetic, drawing in people of all backgrounds and personalities.

Above all, Carmelo was a devoted son, a loving brother, and a treasured grandson, nephew, and cousin. His family describes him as the heart of their home—dependable, affectionate, and full of life. He had a deep bond with his younger siblings, often tutoring them, playing games, or simply being the protective older brother they adored. The Tibus family is now navigating an unimaginable loss, and the outpouring of love from the community has been a small measure of comfort in these darkest of days.

In the wake of Carmelo’s passing, a candlelight vigil was held at the North Farmington soccer field, where classmates, teammates, and families gathered to honor his memory. The bleachers were filled with tearful friends sharing stories, while dozens of candles lit up the night—each flame a symbol of the lives Carmelo touched in his short but meaningful time on earth. His jersey, #14, was draped across the fence alongside heartfelt messages, flowers, and photographs.

Counselors have been made available at North Farmington High School to support students and staff as they grieve, and the school has announced plans to dedicate the upcoming soccer season to Carmelo’s memory. A scholarship fund is also being organized in his name, aimed at supporting aspiring young athletes who exhibit the same passion and determination Carmelo embodied.

As the community grapples with this heartbreaking loss, one truth resounds clearly: Carmelo Quiton Tibus will never be forgotten. His legacy—of kindness, perseverance, and love—will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Though his time on earth was far too brief, his impact was profound and lasting.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tibus, his younger siblings, and a wide circle of family and friends who will carry his memory forward with honor and love.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be shared by the family in the coming days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Carmelo Tibus Memorial Fund to support youth athletic and educational initiatives.

Rest in peace, Carmelo. You were deeply loved, and you will be forever missed.
