Tragic Firework Accident: 12-Year-Old Airlifted After Suffering Severe Hand Injury in Visalia

VISALIA, CA — June 23, 2025 — A Tulare County neighborhood was rocked by a frightening and heartbreaking incident Monday evening after a 12-year-old boy was severely injured by an illegal firework. The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) responded swiftly to the scene in the 30600 block of Markham Avenue in Visalia just after 6:30 p.m., where they discovered the child suffering from serious trauma to his hand.

According to deputies, the young boy had been handling an illegal firework when it unexpectedly detonated, causing major injuries. Emergency services were immediately dispatched, and given the severity of the wounds, the child was airlifted to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.

TCSO detectives remain on the scene as the investigation continues. Details about where the firework came from or who may have provided it to the child are still being gathered. Authorities are working to determine whether additional parties may be held responsible and if charges related to the possession or distribution of illegal fireworks will follow.

This tragic incident comes just days ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, a time when fireworks-related accidents unfortunately tend to spike across the country. In response, Sheriff Mike Boudreaux issued a somber and urgent warning to the public:

“This accident is a heartbreaking reminder of just how dangerous fireworks can be — especially when they are illegal or used improperly. We want families to celebrate safely, but this type of incident is 100% preventable. Please, talk to your children. Keep fireworks out of their hands. Use only legal fireworks in safe, supervised settings. No celebration is worth this kind of suffering.”

The boy’s condition has not been publicly disclosed, but the sheriff’s office confirms that he is receiving the best care possible and that support is being provided to his family during this extremely difficult time.

This incident has sparked renewed concern among Tulare County residents and first responders, many of whom witness the dangers of fireworks firsthand each summer. While fireworks can bring joy and excitement during Independence Day festivities, law enforcement officials emphasize that their improper use — especially by children — poses life-altering risks, including burns, amputations, and even fatalities.

TCSO has increased its presence in neighborhoods across the county in the weeks leading up to July 4th, working to crack down on illegal fireworks and educate the public on firework safety. The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to attend professional fireworks displays rather than attempting to use personal fireworks — especially those that are not legal in the state of California.

Safety Tips from TCSO:

  • Never allow children to handle or ignite fireworks.
  • Only use legal, state-approved fireworks, and follow all instructions closely.
  • Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby in case of fire or malfunction.
  • Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and soak it in water.
  • Do not use fireworks under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Dispose of used fireworks properly by soaking them in water and placing them in a metal trash can away from any buildings or combustible materials.

As the investigation continues, TCSO asks that any residents with information about the origin of the firework involved in this incident come forward. Anyone with tips can contact the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office anonymously.

This Fourth of July, let this terrible accident serve as a powerful reminder: fireworks are not toys. One moment of carelessness can lead to a lifetime of consequences. The community’s thoughts and prayers are with the young boy and his family, as they face the long road to recovery.

Stay safe, Tulare County — and remember, if you see illegal fireworks being used in your neighborhood, report it before tragedy strikes.
