Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation on Nancy Lane in Winston-Salem
Winston-Salem, North Carolina – A quiet neighborhood in Winston-Salem was shaken Friday after an officer-involved shooting occurred on Nancy Lane, prompting an active investigation by local authorities. The Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) confirmed that one or more of its officers discharged their weapons during an incident in the 1000 block of Nancy Lane, though details remain limited.
According to a brief official statement issued by WSPD, the situation unfolded sometime on the morning of June 27, and investigators have since secured the scene. Law enforcement emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public, and that the area is safe.
Residents in the neighborhood reported seeing a heavy police presence, including marked patrol cars and detectives canvassing the area. Some neighbors told local reporters they heard what sounded like gunshots and saw officers blocking off the street shortly after.
As of Friday evening, WSPD has not disclosed the identity of the person involved, the nature of the call that led to police response, or whether anyone was injured or killed in the incident. Authorities have also not confirmed whether the shooting stemmed from a traffic stop, a domestic disturbance, or another type of call for service.
In accordance with standard procedures for officer-involved shootings, an internal investigation has been launched, and officers involved will likely be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome. It is not yet clear whether an outside agency, such as the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), will be brought in to conduct an independent review.
WSPD said more information will be released as the investigation progresses.
Community members and advocacy groups are already calling for transparency, urging law enforcement to release body camera footage and additional facts surrounding the incident as soon as possible.
Anyone with information related to the shooting is urged to contact the Winston-Salem Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 336-727-2800.
