Tragedy in Detroit: 4-Year-Old and Teen Killed in East Side Park Shooting

DETROIT, MI — A peaceful evening turned tragic on Friday when gunfire erupted at a park near Denby High School, claiming the lives of two individuals — including a 4-year-old child — and injuring another teenager. The Detroit Police Department has confirmed it is actively investigating the deadly incident that has left a community in shock and mourning.

The shooting occurred in the area of Kelly and Morang on Detroit’s east side, near Skinner Playfield, just adjacent to the high school. Authorities say the violence began as an argument between individuals at the park that quickly escalated to gunfire.

In total, three people were shot during the incident:

  • A 4-year-old child, described by police as an innocent bystander, tragically died at the scene.
  • An 18-year-old male, believed to be involved in the initial dispute, was also killed.
  • A 17-year-old male sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently receiving treatment.

Detroit Police Chief James White addressed the media Friday night, visibly emotional over the loss of the young child. “This is heartbreaking. A 4-year-old baby — someone who should have been laughing, playing, and living a carefree life — was killed because of senseless violence. We will not rest until everyone responsible is brought to justice.”

Officers quickly responded to the scene and were able to take two individuals into custody in connection with the shooting. Their names and charges have not yet been released as investigators continue to gather witness statements and process evidence.

Multiple shell casings were recovered at the scene, and detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and school cameras to piece together exactly what happened.

The community is reeling from the devastating loss. Residents have left flowers, teddy bears, and balloons at the edge of the park in honor of the young child whose life was so abruptly ended. Local leaders are also urging anyone with information to come forward.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan released a statement late Friday night saying, “Tonight, our city is grieving. We must do more — all of us — to protect our children and resolve conflicts without violence. My prayers are with the families affected.”

The investigation remains active, and police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has video footage to contact Detroit Police Homicide at (313) 596-2260 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

As the city reflects on this tragedy, it serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against gun violence — and the innocent lives it continues to claim.
