Woman Arrested After Saturday Morning Shooting in Jefferson County

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ind. (June 28, 2025) — A woman has been arrested following a Saturday morning shooting that prompted a swift law enforcement response and left one man seriously injured. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) confirmed it is actively investigating the incident, which unfolded just before 8:00 a.m. on June 28.

According to JCSO, Central Dispatch received a 911 call reporting that a male subject had been shot at a residence in the county. Emergency units from multiple agencies—including Madison Police Department, Indiana State Police, and JCSO deputies—rushed to the scene.

Upon arrival, responding officers located an adult male victim lying in the front yard, suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was immediately given medical attention and transported to a nearby Madison hospital, where his injuries were stabilized before he was airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital for further treatment. At this time, the man’s condition remains unknown.

As the situation developed, law enforcement discovered that the alleged shooter had retreated into the residence and briefly barricaded herself inside, refusing to exit. Officers negotiated with the woman, who was later identified as Cara Ross. After a short standoff, Ross surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without further incident.

Investigators say Ross is believed to be the homeowner and is now facing preliminary charges of Criminal Recklessness with a Firearm, a serious offense under Indiana law. The nature of the relationship between Ross and the victim has not been disclosed, and the motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

Authorities have not stated whether additional charges may be filed, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. Forensic teams remained on-site for several hours, processing the scene and interviewing witnesses.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with further information about the incident to come forward and assist investigators as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.

This marks yet another reminder of the dangers of firearm-related violence and the importance of resolving conflict without resorting to lethal force. The community remains on edge as officials continue to piece together what led to the violent encounter.

Updates will be provided by the Sheriff’s Office as more information becomes available.
