MATTOON, IL — A devastating incident rocked the quiet town of Mattoon on Friday morning when a vehicle slammed into the north wall of the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home, a longstanding nursing facility known for its compassionate care and deep roots in the community. The crash occurred at approximately 11:28 a.m., causing extensive damage to the facility and resulting in the tragic death of one resident. Another resident remains in critical condition as of Friday afternoon.

According to the Mattoon Police Department, the driver of the vehicle, identified as Curtis Meadows, 54, has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated driving under the influence (DUI). Investigators believe that Meadows lost control of the vehicle before it veered off the road and plowed into the building, crashing directly into a residential wing where elderly patients were resting.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene moments after the incident was reported, arriving to a chaotic and heartbreaking scene. Firefighters and paramedics worked quickly to assess the damage and attend to the injured. Despite their best efforts, one resident succumbed to injuries at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of family.

The second victim, also a resident of the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home, was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Officials have not yet released further details regarding the individual’s injuries or prognosis, but sources close to the investigation have described the injuries as life-threatening.

“This is a heartbreaking event for our community and for everyone involved,” said Mattoon Police Chief Jason Taylor during a press conference Friday afternoon. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the entire staff and resident community at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home. We are treating this incident with the utmost seriousness.”

The Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home, located on the north side of Mattoon, has served as a care facility for elderly residents for decades. Known for its close-knit staff and compassionate approach to elder care, the home is considered a pillar of support for many local families. In the wake of the crash, the facility has initiated a temporary lockdown while structural assessments are conducted and counselors are brought in to support traumatized residents and staff.

Curtis Meadows was taken into custody at the scene without incident. Authorities have not released details about his blood alcohol content or whether he has a history of DUI offenses, but they did confirm that toxicology results are pending. Meadows is expected to face multiple charges in connection with the crash, including aggravated DUI resulting in death and bodily harm.

Residents and neighbors gathered nearby throughout the day, many visibly shaken by the tragedy. Flowers have already begun appearing near the facility’s north entrance, a quiet tribute to the lives affected by the shocking accident.

“This place is more than just a nursing home. It’s where our parents and grandparents are cared for with dignity,” said local resident Cynthia Warner, whose mother resides in the facility. “It’s devastating to think something like this could happen in such a place of peace and safety.”

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash, including whether speed, intoxication, or other factors may have contributed. Police are asking any witnesses or individuals with relevant video footage to come forward as the investigation unfolds.

In the meantime, the community of Mattoon is left reeling — mourning a life lost and praying for another hanging in the balance, as questions about how and why this tragedy occurred begin to surface.
