SHREVEPORT, LA —  The city of Shreveport is in mourning and outrage following a horrific act of violence committed against 91-year-old Sallie Mae Johnson, who was found beaten, bound, and locked inside a closet in her own home on the evening of July 2, 2025. Police have arrested 24-year-old Kendrell Thomas in connection with the attack, a crime authorities are calling “unthinkable, inexcusable, and evil.”

Sallie Mae Johnson was discovered barely alive after enduring what first responders and hospital staff described as a brutal and prolonged ordeal. She had been left without food, water, or care—essentially abandoned to die. According to medical personnel, it is nothing short of miraculous that she survived long enough to be rescued.

Arrest of Kendrell Thomas

After an urgent investigation, detectives with the Shreveport Police Department identified Kendrell Thomas as the suspect. With assistance from the department’s Narcotics Unit and federal partners, Thomas was located and arrested at Stone Vista Apartments.

He is now facing several serious felony charges, including:

  • Attempted First-Degree Murder
  • Aggravated Kidnapping
  • Second-Degree Battery
  • Home Invasion

Authorities have not released the full details of how Thomas gained access to Ms. Johnson’s home, nor have they clarified the nature of any relationship between the suspect and the victim. However, investigators believe this was not a random attack.

Community Response

The Shreveport community is devastated by the crime and has rallied in support of Ms. Johnson and her family. A prayer vigil is being organized, and neighbors are calling for increased awareness and protection for the elderly, especially those living alone.

“This is a crime that shakes the soul,” said a local council member. “To harm someone as vulnerable and respected as Ms. Johnson is beyond comprehension. We are grateful to the Shreveport Police Department for acting swiftly and ensuring Kendrell Thomas is in custody.”

Victim’s Condition

As of the latest reports, Sallie Mae Johnson remains in critical condition at a local hospital. She is receiving intensive medical care, and doctors are cautiously hopeful. Friends and family describe her as a quiet, kind-hearted woman who has lived in the same neighborhood for over six decades and is cherished by all who know her.

Ongoing Investigation

Police are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses. Anyone with additional information related to the assault is urged to contact the Shreveport Police Department or Crime Stoppers at (318) 673-7373.

A Call for Vigilance and Justice

This incident has sparked broader conversations about elder safety and domestic violence prevention. Community leaders are encouraging neighbors to regularly check in on elderly residents and report any signs of abuse or neglect.

The arrest of Kendrell Thomas brings a measure of relief, but for many in Shreveport, the road to healing is just beginning. The community stands united in support of Ms. Johnson and in its call for justice.

“We will never stop fighting for our most vulnerable,” said a Shreveport Police spokesperson. “This kind of cruelty has no place here. Not now, not ever.”
