OAKLAND, Calif. — A California parole officer was fatally shot Thursday afternoon at a state parole office in Oakland, prompting a large-scale manhunt and heightened police activity across the city, according to multiple law enforcement sources.
The shooting occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m. inside the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) parole office located at 7717 Edgewater Drive, law enforcement officials confirmed.
The victim, a male parole officer whose identity has not yet been released, was rushed to Highland Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Law enforcement agencies responded en masse to the scene, immediately securing the building and launching a homicide investigation.
The area around the parole office has been cordoned off, and Edgewater Drive remains closed in both directions as investigators process the scene and search for the suspect.
A suspect is in custody.

According to preliminary reports, the suspect — described as a Black male, approximately 5’5”, wearing all black clothing with short hair — fled the scene following the shooting.
Law enforcement sources indicate the suspect hijacked a bus in an attempt to evade capture, triggering a citywide manhunt.
Authorities believe the suspect may be armed and dangerous.
A significant police presence has been reported in the area of 90th Avenue and International Boulevard, where officers are actively pursuing leads. Tactical units, including SWAT and K-9 teams, have been deployed.
The Oakland Police Department, in coordination with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, the CDCR, and federal agencies, is leading the investigation.
A command post has been established at the Edgewater Drive location, and homicide detectives are working to determine the circumstances that led to the deadly encounter.
