In the early hours of Wednesday, July 30, 2025, a senseless act of violence took the life of 32-year-old Jimmy Arevalo, a contractor working in Houston’s Third Ward. Around 12:30 a.m., Arevalo was power washing kitchen equipment outside a convenience store and restaurant at 2528 Calumet Street, near South Freeway and Brays Bayou, when he was fatally shot.
Surveillance footage captured the incident, showing a gray Toyota Tundra truck pulling up to the scene. The driver, identified as 38-year-old Omar Marzouk, engaged Arevalo in a brief conversation. The exchange quickly escalated into an altercation, during which Marzouk allegedly shot Arevalo at close range. Marzouk then fled the scene in the truck, driving away calmly as witnessed by those nearby.
Arevalo’s brother, Anthony Arevalo, was working inside the store at the time. Hearing the commotion, he rushed outside to find his brother lying on the ground, covered in blood. Despite efforts to save him, Jimmy Arevalo was pronounced dead at the scene. Anthony, devastated by the loss, described his brother as a hardworking, humble, and outgoing person who was always ready to help others. He speculated that the shooting may have stemmed from a noise complaint related to the pressure washer, a issue they had encountered before, though police have not confirmed a motive or whether the attack was random or targeted.
The Houston Police Department swiftly identified Omar Marzouk as the suspect. By Thursday afternoon, July 31, 2025, HPD Southwest Patrol Division officers apprehended Marzouk, who was charged with murder in the 182nd State District Court. On Friday, August 1, 2025, Marzouk appeared in court, where a judge set his bond at $500,000.
The shooting occurred outside OMG Seafood/Daiquiri Land, where Arevalo was contracted through Tony’s Grease Clean, a company owned by his brother. The owner of OMG Seafood expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing that Arevalo was not an employee and that the violence was unrelated to their business. The establishment is fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation.
Jimmy Arevalo leaves behind a grieving family, including Anthony and his two children, who cherished their uncle’s vibrant spirit. The tragedy has shaken the Third Ward community, prompting calls for increased vigilance and safety measures in the area.
