Almont Community Grieves 30-Year-Old Logan Welch Lost in Workplace Shooting Tragedy

ALMONT, MICHIGAN — The tight-knit community of Almont is reeling from heartbreak following the tragic loss of Logan Welch, 30, who passed away in a workplace shooting on Wednesday morning, November 5, 2025. The devastating incident unfolded at a local manufacturing plant, leaving friends, family, and coworkers stunned by the sudden and senseless act of violence that claimed a young man’s life filled with promise.

According to the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:42 a.m. after receiving reports of shots fired inside an industrial facility located on Van Dyke Road, just south of downtown Almont. When law enforcement arrived, they found two employees suffering from gunshot wounds. Tragically, Logan Welch was pronounced deceased at the scene despite life-saving efforts by first responders and paramedics from Almont Fire and EMS.

A second victim, whose identity has not been released publicly, was airlifted to McLaren Lapeer Region Hospital and remains in stable condition. The suspected shooter, a 44-year-old coworker, was taken into custody without incident after being found near the rear of the building. Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s name pending formal charges but confirmed that the firearm used in the shooting has been recovered.

Sheriff Scott McKenna said in a statement that investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a “workplace-related dispute” and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The Michigan State Police Crime Lab and the Lapeer County Major Crimes Unit are assisting in the investigation, which is still in its early stages.

The news of Logan’s passing has shattered the Almont community, where he was well known for his kindness, humility, and dedication both to his family and his work. Friends and colleagues described him as a steady, hardworking man with a contagious laugh and a love for helping others. “Logan was the kind of guy who would stay late to help you finish your shift or lend his tools without you even asking,” said coworker Ethan Morales. “He treated everyone with respect.”

Born and raised in Imlay City, Logan graduated from Almont High School in 2013 and went on to build a successful career in industrial maintenance. Outside of work, his greatest pride was his family. Logan married his wife, Hannah Welch (née Peterson), in 2022, and the two were eagerly awaiting the birth of their first child, due in April 2026.

In a statement shared by family friends, Hannah expressed her heartbreak:

“Logan was my best friend and the love of my life. He was so excited to become a father. He already had the nursery planned and spent his weekends painting and assembling baby furniture. I can’t believe he’s gone.”

To support Hannah and the baby on the way, a GoFundMe campaign was launched Thursday morning by family friend Megan Lawrence. The fundraiser, titled “Hope for Hannah and Baby Welch,” has already gathered thousands of dollars in donations within hours of being posted. “This is about helping Hannah navigate an unthinkable loss and ensuring Logan’s child grows up knowing how deeply loved their father was,” Lawrence wrote on the page.

Almont residents have also begun organizing a candlelight vigil set to take place Saturday evening at Almont Village Park, where community members will gather to share memories and offer prayers for the Welch family. Local businesses are planning to dim their lights at 8 p.m. in solidarity.

Friends describe Logan as a family man with simple joys — fishing trips with his father, Sunday dinners at his grandparents’ house, and volunteering at community events. “He never wanted attention,” said his uncle, Jeff Welch. “He just wanted to make people’s lives a little better. That’s who he was.”

The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that grief counselors are being made available for Logan’s coworkers and others affected by the tragedy.

Funeral arrangements for Logan Welch are being handled by Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Almont. His family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to the GoFundMe supporting Hannah and their unborn child.

As Almont grieves, Logan’s legacy lives on through the love he gave so freely — to his family, his friends, and now, the child who will grow up hearing stories of a man whose kindness and strength touched everyone around him.

“Logan was one of the good ones,” said his father, Michael Welch. “He worked hard, loved deeply, and lived honestly. We’ll spend the rest of our lives honoring the man he was.”
