Another Mass Shooting Shakes Chicago: Four Wounded in Early Morning Attack in Altgeld Gardens

Spread the News with People

CHICAGO, IL — July 3, 2025 – Just hours after a mass shooting claimed four lives and injured fourteen others outside the Artis Lounge nightclub in Chicago’s River North neighborhood, tragedy struck again—this time on the city’s Far South Side. In the early hours of Thursday, July 3, the Altgeld Gardens community was the scene of yet another senseless act of gun violence, as four individuals were shot in the 600 block of East 133rd Street, near the intersection of 133rd and Langley.

The incident occurred around 3:17 a.m., according to the Chicago Police Department. A group of people was gathered outside when unknown assailants opened fire, sending panic through the quiet residential neighborhood. The motive behind the shooting is currently unknown, and police have not released details on the suspect or suspects involved.

Responding to the Scene

Officers from the 5th District were dispatched to the scene immediately following the report of shots fired. Upon arrival, they discovered two individuals wounded on-site. The other two victims had already been transported by private means to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.

Authorities have not released the identities of the victims, but all four were reported to have sustained non-fatal injuries. As of Thursday morning, they remain hospitalized, with conditions ranging from stable to serious. Police are continuing to gather information from witnesses and nearby security footage to identify those responsible for the shooting.

A Night of Violence in Chicago

The Altgeld Gardens shooting came mere hours after a deadly mass shooting outside Artis Lounge, where four people—identified as Taylor “Tay Tay” Walker, Avi Drexler, Vonte, and Lpeezy—were killed in a drive-by attack, and at least fourteen others were injured. That incident, still under active investigation, took place during a music release party in the heart of downtown Chicago and has already sparked outrage and grief across the city.

Now, with a second mass shooting in the span of just a few hours, Chicagoans are grappling with the painful reality of a city battling a relentless cycle of gun violence. What began as a summer night of celebration and community quickly turned into one of fear, mourning, and growing frustration over the ongoing loss of life.

Community on Edge

The Altgeld Gardens community, one of the city’s historically underserved areas, is no stranger to the trauma of gun violence. Residents in the Golden Gate neighborhood and nearby areas have long called for more community investment, better policing strategies, and support systems to break the pattern of shootings that continue to plague Chicago’s South and West Sides.

Thursday’s shooting adds yet another chapter to a tragic story that feels all too familiar. Community members are once again asking the urgent questions: Why does this keep happening? What will it take to stop it? Who is listening?

Local organizations and faith leaders have stepped in to offer counseling and support for the victims and their families. Several community leaders have called for a unity march in Altgeld Gardens later this week to protest the violence and demand comprehensive solutions—from gun control legislation to youth outreach and economic development.

Police Investigation Ongoing

As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the Altgeld Gardens shooting. Chicago Police detectives are urging anyone with information, security footage, or eyewitness accounts to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously via Crime Stoppers, and all leads are being taken seriously as investigators piece together what led to yet another burst of deadly violence.

A City at a Crossroads

With two mass shootings in less than 12 hours, the city of Chicago is once again thrust into national headlines for all the wrong reasons. Residents are reeling, and communities across the city are uniting in sorrow and anger, demanding action and accountability.

As investigations continue, and as families tend to their wounded and mourn their dead, one thing remains painfully clear: Chicago is in crisis, and the time for meaningful, sustained change is long overdue.

If you or someone you know has any information related to the Altgeld Gardens shooting, please contact the Chicago Police Department or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
