Arrest Made Following Fatal Shooting During Suspected Burglary in Spotsylvania County

On May 6, 2025, the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Tyler Chase Butler, 27, of Spotsylvania County in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred over the weekend during a reported residential burglary. Butler has been charged with Felony Murder in the 2nd Degree, Malicious Wounding, and two counts of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. He is currently being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.

Incident Overview

At approximately 3:00 a.m. on May 3, 2025, deputies from the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting an active residential burglary in progress. The incident took place in the area of Mckenzie Lane. According to the caller, shots had been fired within the residence.

Upon arrival, deputies located three individuals believed to have been involved in the alleged burglary. Two of the individuals had sustained gunshot wounds. Michael Bosworth, Jr., 18, was critically injured and was immediately transported to a local hospital. Despite medical efforts, Bosworth later succumbed to his injuries.

The second gunshot victim, identified as a juvenile, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released from medical care. A third juvenile who was also reportedly present during the incident was unharmed and has not been publicly identified due to their age.

Ongoing Investigation

Preliminary investigation by law enforcement suggests that the individuals were involved in an attempted burglary when the shooting occurred. As the investigation progressed, evidence led detectives to identify Tyler Chase Butler as the alleged shooter. He was taken into custody on May 6, 2025, and formally charged.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the case, including the nature of the confrontation and the sequence of events that led to the shooting. The Sheriff’s Office is working in coordination with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, and additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation develops.

Due to the involvement of juveniles, their identities and specific roles are being withheld in accordance with state privacy laws.

“This is a tragic situation that resulted in the loss of a young life and impacted many families. Our deputies responded swiftly and professionally to a highly volatile scene. We will ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted and that justice is served appropriately for all parties involved.”
