Birmingham Man Fatally Shot, Crashes While Fleeing, Leaving Friends to Seek Help in Tragic Early-Morning Ordeal
A tragic incident unfolded in Birmingham, Alabama, in the early hours of Wednesday, July 23, 2025, when 32-year-old Devin Wayne Hughes was found fatally shot inside a vehicle that had crashed into the front yard of a home in the 4100 block of Avenue L in Ensley.
Birmingham Police responded to the scene around 3 a.m. after being flagged down by two individuals who reported that their friend had been shot. According to authorities, Hughes and his two passengers were at a different location when an unknown assailant opened fire on their car. Despite sustaining fatal gunshot wounds, Hughes attempted to flee the scene by driving away but lost control and crashed shortly afterward.
The two passengers escaped the vehicle unharmed and sought help, eventually alerting a West Precinct officer. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced Hughes dead at the scene.
As of now, no suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made. The Birmingham Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the events leading up to the crash.
