Orange County, TX — A devastating and chaotic scene is unfolding just south of Mauriceville after a fatal multi-vehicle crash on Highway 62 near Panther Run, where preliminary reports suggest that two vehicles were engaged in a high-speed chase that ended in a head-on collision.
Emergency crews from multiple agencies, including Orange County EMS, fire departments, and law enforcement, responded quickly to the scene late this afternoon, where the highway is now completely blocked in both directions as investigators work to understand what led to the deadly crash.
According to early reports, at least two vehicles were reportedly chasing each other along Hwy 62 when the incident occurred. The high-speed pursuit allegedly escalated into a violent crash, and officials now believe up to four vehicles may have been involved in the collision or subsequent wreckage.
Tragically, at least one person has been confirmed deceased, though authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim pending family notification. Several others are believed to be injured, and paramedics on the scene have transported individuals to area hospitals. Their conditions remain unknown at this time.
The crash site has been described by witnesses and first responders as “devastating,” with mangled vehicles, debris scattered across the roadway, and a large emergency response presence. Investigators are currently combing through the scene for evidence, interviewing potential witnesses, and coordinating traffic control as they try to piece together the events that led up to the collision.
Authorities have not yet confirmed what sparked the chase or how many individuals were inside each vehicle. It’s also unclear whether law enforcement had any prior contact with the involved parties before the incident.
The Texas Department of Public Safety and Orange County Sheriff’s Office are leading the investigation, and Highway 62 remains shut down indefinitely in both directions as crews work to clear the wreckage and conduct a thorough scene examination.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area and find alternative routes, as delays are expected to continue through the evening.
