Cache County SWAT Standoff in Hyrum: Man Wearing Bomb Vest Claims He Killed His Wife, Exchanges Gunfire with Police

HYRUM, Utah – A terrifying and volatile situation continues to unfold in the city of Hyrum, Cache County, where a 45-year-old man claiming to have killed his wife has engaged in a standoff with law enforcement, including SWAT teams and bomb squad units. The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, reportedly called police around 5:00 a.m. Sunday morning, stating that he had murdered his spouse and was wearing an explosive device.

The call launched an intense law enforcement response, with Cache County Sheriff’s deputies first arriving at the scene near 100 South and 400 West in Hyrum. Upon their arrival, the suspect opened fire on responding officers, prompting law enforcement to return fire. No injuries have been reported from that exchange.

SWAT Mobilized, Neighborhoods Evacuated

Due to the potential presence of explosives and the severity of the threat, the situation quickly escalated. SWAT units and armored vehicles from the Logan, Brigham City, and Ogden Police Departments were deployed to the area. A full perimeter was established around the suspect’s home.

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office issued a public emergency alert shortly after the incident began, urging all residents to “Stay Completely Away” from the area of 100 South and 400 West. Law enforcement began evacuating surrounding homes out of an abundance of caution.

Suspect Claims Explosives Inside Home

During negotiations, police were able to briefly establish communication with the suspect, who sent images of a bomb vest and additional explosives reportedly located inside the house. The threat level remains extremely high as officials cannot confirm whether the devices are real or if others may be involved.

Law enforcement officials stated that since the initial contact, all communication with the suspect has ceased, raising concerns about his mental state and the potential for further violence or detonation of explosive materials.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Safety Warning

As of late Sunday morning, the standoff remains active, and law enforcement officials continue to monitor the suspect’s movements using surveillance and tactical resources. Bomb technicians and hostage negotiators remain on site, working under extreme caution to avoid triggering any explosive devices.

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office has reiterated that this is an active and extremely dangerous situation, and has pleaded with the public to stay away from the scene entirely to avoid interfering with the response or putting themselves at risk.

“We understand the fear and disruption this has caused the Hyrum community,” said a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office. “Our top priority is the safety of the public, first responders, and any potential victims still unaccounted for inside the residence.”

What Comes Next

At this time, the fate of the woman the suspect claims to have killed remains unknown. Investigators have not confirmed whether anyone else is inside the home or whether any hostages are involved. Authorities are working with explosive ordnance disposal experts to evaluate the threat and determine when or how to safely enter the residence.

The name of the suspect has not yet been released, and no charges have been formally filed. Updates are expected as the situation evolves and law enforcement is able to gain more control over the scene.

Anyone in the Hyrum area is urged to follow emergency alerts and stay tuned to official law enforcement channels for ongoing updates. Do not approach the area, and if you live nearby, remain evacuated until instructed otherwise.
