CASE UPDATE: Suspect in Fatal Riverview Drive Shooting Apprehended – Formal Charges Pending

KALAMAZOO, MI – Authorities have confirmed that the suspect involved in the fatal shooting near Riverview Drive and East Paterson Street on May 28, 2025, has been taken into custody. The arrest marks a critical breakthrough in a case that shocked the community and led to a concentrated effort by law enforcement to bring justice to the victim and their family.

According to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS), a formal news release with further details—including the suspect’s name, charges, and arraignment information—will be provided following the suspect’s first court appearance. The identity of the individual has not yet been publicly disclosed pending formal charges.

Background on the Incident

The fatal shooting occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 28, 2025, and was one of two separate shootings KDPS responded to overnight.

First Incident – Non-Fatal Shooting on North Rose Street

At approximately 7:28 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, KDPS officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of North Rose Street after receiving multiple 911 calls about shots fired. Upon arrival, officers found an 18-year-old male suffering from a grazing gunshot wound. The victim told officers he had been riding a scooter when he was shot at. He declined medical attention and was unable to provide details about the assailant.

A canvass of the area yielded no shell casings or suspect leads. No arrests have been made in connection with this incident, and the suspect remains at large. KDPS continues to investigate and encourages anyone with information to come forward.

Second Incident – Fatal Shooting Near Riverview Drive and East Paterson Street

Shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, a KDPS officer was flagged down by a passerby near Riverview Drive and East Paterson Street regarding a possible shooting. As the officer responded, dispatch received multiple 911 calls confirming the incident.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a 42-year-old male victim with gunshot wounds to the head and abdomen. CPR was initiated immediately, and the victim was rushed to a local hospital. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at 3:16 a.m. despite life-saving efforts.

Investigators recovered shell casings at the scene, and KDPS’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) promptly launched a full-scale investigation. Through evidence and witness interviews, the suspect was positively identified within hours of the shooting, setting the stage for the arrest that followed days later.

Community Impact and Law Enforcement Response

The two incidents—particularly the fatal shooting—have left the Kalamazoo community on edge. Residents are encouraged by the swift and coordinated response of KDPS, which brought a sense of justice and accountability in the wake of violence.

“This arrest brings a measure of closure to a senseless act of violence that claimed a life,” said a KDPS spokesperson. “Our officers and investigators worked tirelessly to identify, locate, and apprehend the suspect, and we thank the public for their support and cooperation.”

KDPS has reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and continues to urge anyone with knowledge about either incident to come forward. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Silent Observer at (269) 343-2100 or online.

A formal update is expected to be released following the suspect’s arraignment, offering more insight into the motive, the relationship between the victim and suspect (if any), and the next steps in the legal process.

As Kalamazoo grapples with the impact of recent gun violence, community leaders are calling for peace, vigilance, and support for the families affected by these traumatic events.
