CLINTON, KY — April 30, 2025 — The community of Clinton and the broader legal and civic circles across Kentucky are mourning the sudden and tragic loss of Michael Stacy, a respected Commonwealth Attorney, who died in a fatal car crash on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Kentucky State Police (KSP), the accident occurred at approximately 3:21 p.m. on U.S. Highway 51, just outside the city limits of Clinton in Hickman County. Preliminary reports indicate that Stacy was traveling northbound when his vehicle crossed the center line for unknown reasons and collided head-on with a southbound commercial truck.

Emergency responders arrived swiftly at the scene, but despite their efforts, Stacy was pronounced dead on-site due to injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the truck was transported to a nearby medical facility with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities have stated that an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the collision, and toxicology tests are being conducted as part of standard procedure.

Michael Stacy, 48, served as Commonwealth Attorney for Kentucky’s First Judicial Circuit, covering Ballard, Carlisle, Fulton, and Hickman counties. Known for his integrity, fierce advocacy, and unwavering dedication to justice, Stacy had earned deep respect from colleagues, law enforcement officers, and the citizens he served.

“This is a profound loss for our community,” said Judge Karen Faulkner of the First Circuit Court. “Michael was not just a talented prosecutor — he was a friend, a mentor, and a public servant whose heart was always with the people of Western Kentucky. His absence will be felt for years to come.”

Stacy had spent over two decades in public service, rising through the ranks from Assistant Commonwealth Attorney to lead the office in recent years. He was known for his tough stance on violent crime and drug-related offenses but was equally committed to restorative justice and second chances when appropriate. Local leaders credit him for launching initiatives to improve communication between law enforcement and at-risk youth, and for advocating for mental health resources within the criminal justice system.

“He was more than just a lawyer in a courtroom — he was a true community advocate,” said Hickman County Sheriff Charles McNeely. “We’ve lost someone who genuinely cared about making our counties safer and more just for everyone.”

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Stacy was deeply involved in civic life. He volunteered with youth mentorship programs, was a familiar face at local school board meetings, and was an active member of Clinton’s First Baptist Church. Friends and colleagues recall his deep laugh, his open-door policy, and his tireless work ethic.

Gov. Andy Beshear released a statement late Tuesday evening, expressing his condolences to Stacy’s family and colleagues. “Michael Stacy was a dedicated public servant who embodied the best of Kentucky’s legal community. Our hearts are with his loved ones and the entire First Judicial Circuit. We honor his memory and the work he did to strengthen justice in our Commonwealth.”

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, but local officials expect a large turnout from across the state. Flags at government buildings throughout Hickman County will be flown at half-staff in his honor.

As investigations continue into the cause of the crash, the loss of Michael Stacy casts a long shadow over the region. For those who knew him — whether in a courtroom, at a community event, or simply passing on the street — his legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched through justice, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to public service.
