DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — Tragedy struck Darlington County in the early hours of Tuesday, July 1, 2025, when Deputy Devin Mason, 27, was shot and killed during an ambush at a home on Old Timers Court near Lamar. The suspected gunman, 25-year-old Cameron Ray Dennett, was also killed during the exchange of gunfire. A second deputy was injured and remains hospitalized in stable condition, according to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputies were responding to a home where Dennett—a wanted felon with active warrants for criminal conspiracy and forgery—was believed to be hiding. Dennett, who was also legally prohibited from possessing a firearm due to prior convictions, opened fire after deputies entered the residence around 1:30 a.m., resulting in a deadly confrontation.

Deputy Mason, who had recently completed his field training after graduating from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in March 2025, was fatally wounded in the ambush. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

The second deputy, whose name has not been publicly released, was also shot during the encounter and is now recovering.

At the scene, law enforcement also arrested Kristen Porter, 28, who was wanted on similar charges as Dennett. She was booked into the Florence County Detention Center and remains in custody.
