SUMMERVILLE, GA — A tragic act of violence on Friday, June 6, 2025, has left the Summerville community reeling, as a male victim lost his life in a fatal shooting incident that unfolded on Oak Street. Authorities responded quickly, and a suspect is now in custody as investigators work to uncover the full story behind the deadly encounter.

At approximately 12:36 p.m., officers with the Summerville Police Department were dispatched to the 100 block of Oak Street after receiving an urgent 911 call reporting a shooting. When law enforcement arrived on the scene, they discovered a man lying unresponsive in the middle of the roadway, suffering from what was described as a critical gunshot wound.

Emergency medical personnel were immediately called to the scene and began life-saving efforts. The victim, later identified as Christopher Chapman, was transported to Chattooga ER. Despite the efforts of first responders and hospital staff, Chapman was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The loss of life sent shockwaves through the small northwest Georgia town, where violent incidents of this nature are relatively rare. Residents quickly gathered at the scene, expressing sorrow, disbelief, and concern over the tragedy that had just taken place in their neighborhood.

Law enforcement wasted no time in pursuing leads. Within an hour of the initial shooting report, police had identified a suspect believed to be involved in the deadly encounter. A joint effort between the Summerville Police Department, the Georgia State Patrol, and the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office resulted in the apprehension of the suspect during a traffic stop on Taylor Ridge.

As of Friday evening, the identity of the suspect had not been publicly released, nor had the specific charges. Authorities have indicated that additional information will be forthcoming as the investigation progresses.

In the meantime, the Summerville Police Department is working closely with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to conduct a thorough inquiry. Investigators are actively interviewing witnesses, collecting forensic evidence, and executing search warrants in an effort to piece together the timeline and motive behind the shooting.

Officials are urging members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or have information related to it to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously, and investigators stress that even seemingly minor details could be significant in helping them understand what led to the fatal confrontation.

“This kind of violence is deeply unsettling for a close-knit community like ours,” said Summerville Police Chief Brian Ozment. “Our hearts go out to the family of Mr. Chapman, and we are committed to conducting a full and transparent investigation to ensure justice is served.”

The community has already begun expressing support for the victim’s family, with local leaders calling for unity, compassion, and continued cooperation with law enforcement.

As the investigation continues, Summerville remains on edge but united in its grief and determination to find answers. The tragic loss of Christopher Chapman has not only shaken the immediate neighborhood but also served as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community vigilance.
