Devastation Strikes the Rescue Community: Honoring the Lives of Matthew and Paul Berkovitz

Spread the love

Yesterday, our hearts shattered as the rescue community suffered a tremendous and deeply personal loss. In a tragic small plane crash in Simi Valley, California, we lost two of our own—Matthew and Paul Berkovitz, a devoted father-and-son team of long-time animal rescue pilots. Their sudden passing has left a gaping hole in the hearts of everyone who knew them and the thousands who were touched by their unwavering dedication to saving lives.

Alongside them on this final flight was their beloved dog, Brody, who was more than just a companion—he was a trusted co-pilot and loyal friend. Brody was a familiar face on many missions, bringing comfort not only to Matthew and Paul but to the animals they rescued. Tragically, Brody also lost his life in the crash.

Matthew and Paul were cherished volunteers with Pilots N Paws, a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving animals from euthanasia by transporting them from high-risk shelters to safe havens and adoptive homes. Through their tireless efforts and countless hours in the air, they gave hundreds—if not thousands—of animals a second chance at life. Their compassion, bravery, and selflessness were the true embodiment of the rescue mission.

They flew not for recognition, but out of a deep and genuine love for animals. Each journey they took was a lifeline for the voiceless, a bridge from fear and uncertainty to hope and love. Whether flying across states or into difficult conditions, Matthew and Paul did so with hearts full of purpose. They didn’t just transport animals—they carried dreams, second chances, and healing.

To their family, friends, and everyone touched by their kindness, we extend our deepest, most heartfelt condolences. No words can ease the pain of this immeasurable loss, but may you find some comfort in knowing that Matthew and Paul’s legacy will live on in every life they saved and every rescue mission inspired by their story.

As we grieve together, we honor them by continuing the mission they loved so much. We carry their spirit forward—in every life saved, every paw protected, and every mile flown in the name of compassion.

Fly high, Matthew, Paul, and sweet Brody. Your wings were never just for flying—they were for lifting others when they couldn’t lift themselves. You will never be forgotten.
