Spread the News with People

Birmingham authorities have identified a man killed in a shooting on Sunday afternoon while seated in his SUV in north Birmingham. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed the victim as Curtis Jerome Pruitt, a 65-year-old resident of Birmingham.

The incident occurred just after 2:30 p.m. when North Precinct officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 900 block of Center Street North. Upon arrival, police located a gray SUV in the 10 block of 9th Avenue West, a short distance from the initial call location, near the entrance of a small apartment complex.

Pruitt was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel attempted life-saving measures at the scene before transporting him to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

According to Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald, preliminary investigations suggest a man on foot approached Pruitt’s vehicle and opened fire before fleeing the scene. Detectives are collaborating with the Real Time Crime Center to gather evidence and identify the suspect.

“This tragic incident took place in broad daylight on a Sunday,” Fitzgerald said. “We are urging anyone who witnessed anything or has information to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers.”

Pruitt’s death marks Birmingham’s 43rd homicide of 2025. Across Jefferson County, a total of 67 homicides have been recorded this year, including those within Birmingham city limits.

Authorities are encouraging anyone with information to contact the Birmingham Police Department at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777, where anonymous tips are accepted.
