Fatal Crash Near Mulberry Claims Life of Fort Meade Woman

MULBERRY, Fla. – A devastating traffic accident on Tuesday evening tragically claimed the life of a 36-year-old woman from Fort Meade after a violent head-on collision with a semi-truck in rural Polk County. The incident has left a community in mourning and prompted an ongoing investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO).

According to initial reports released by PCSO, the fatal crash occurred shortly after 8:00 p.m. on State Road 640, near the intersection with Watson Road. This stretch of road, southeast of Mulberry, is known for its narrow lanes and limited visibility during nighttime hours, which may have contributed to the tragic circumstances.

Authorities say the woman, whose identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin, was traveling westbound in a sedan when, for reasons still under investigation, her vehicle crossed over the center line and collided head-on with an eastbound semi-truck. The impact was catastrophic.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, but despite their efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the site of the crash. The driver of the semi-truck, who has not been identified publicly, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Authorities confirmed that the truck driver is cooperating fully with the investigation.

Traffic in the area was shut down for several hours Tuesday night as crash reconstruction teams worked to collect evidence and clear the roadway. The Sheriff’s Office noted that this part of State Road 640 would remain a focus of investigation in the coming days, as detectives work to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the collision.

At this time, no charges have been filed, and investigators have not determined whether speed, impairment, distraction, or any other factors played a role in the crash.

“This is a heartbreaking loss of life,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd in a brief statement. “Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the woman who died in this tragic incident. We urge all drivers to exercise caution, particularly on rural roads where visibility and road conditions can change quickly.”

The Sheriff’s Office also used the moment to remind the public of the dangers of distracted or fatigued driving and the importance of staying alert behind the wheel. In rural communities like those surrounding Mulberry and Fort Meade, where traffic volumes are lower but vehicle speeds are often higher, crashes can have devastating outcomes.

Local residents familiar with the area expressed sorrow and concern, with many calling for improved lighting and enhanced safety measures on State Road 640. “This road is so dark at night, and the curves can be dangerous if you’re not paying attention,” said one resident who lives nearby. “Something needs to be done so this doesn’t happen again.”

The woman’s identity is expected to be released by the medical examiner’s office following proper family notification. Grief counselors are reportedly being made available for both the first responders and the family members impacted by the crash.

As the Polk County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation, anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information is encouraged to contact PCSO directly.

This tragic accident is yet another sobering reminder of the importance of road safety and the unpredictable nature of travel, even on familiar routes. The community of Fort Meade is mourning the loss of one of its own, and many are rallying around the victim’s family with support and condolences during this incredibly difficult time.
