Father Fatally Shot by Son in North Birmingham After Heart-Wrenching Family Dispute

A tragic incident unfolded in North Birmingham on Tuesday afternoon, July 22, 2025, when a man was fatally shot following a heated argument with his son. The altercation began inside a residence in the Hooper City neighborhood and escalated as it moved down the street, culminating in a deadly shooting near the Hooper City Convenience Store in the 3800 block of Fourth Street West.

Birmingham Police Department officers were dispatched to the scene just before 3 p.m. after receiving reports of a person shot. Upon arrival, they found the victim, an adult male whose identity has not yet been released, unresponsive in the street. Despite efforts by medics, he was pronounced dead shortly after.

According to Officer De’Rell Freeman, the preliminary investigation indicates that the father and son were engaged in a verbal dispute that originated at a home several blocks away from the shooting site. The argument continued as the two moved toward the convenience store, where the son allegedly fired the fatal shots. The exact nature of the dispute remains under investigation, with authorities yet to confirm the specific cause.

The suspect, identified as the victim’s son, was apprehended later that day on the city’s east side. He is currently in custody at Birmingham Police headquarters, where he is being questioned by detectives. No charges have been announced as the investigation is ongoing.

This incident marks Birmingham’s 43rd homicide of 2025, a stark reminder of the city’s ongoing struggle with violent crime.
