FINDLAY, OHIO — 90-Year-Old Man Fatally Shot by Police After Allegedly Pointing Firearm

FINDLAY, OHIO — A 90-year-old man was fatally shot by Findlay police officers on Wednesday afternoon after allegedly pointing a firearm at them during a response to a report of a possible shooting. The incident occurred at a residence on Cherry Lane and has since sparked an active investigation by local and state authorities.

According to the Findlay Police Department, officers were dispatched to the neighborhood shortly after 3:00 p.m. following a call reporting gunfire in the area. Upon arrival, officers encountered the elderly male outside the home, where he was reportedly armed with a handgun.

Police stated that as officers approached to assess the situation, the man allegedly raised and pointed the firearm toward them. Officers issued multiple verbal commands ordering him to drop the weapon. When he did not comply and continued to raise the gun, officers discharged their service weapons, striking him.

Emergency medical personnel were immediately called to the scene, and officers rendered aid while awaiting paramedics. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hancock County Coroner’s Office later confirmed his death and took custody of the body for examination.

Authorities emphasized that no other individuals were injured during the incident. Investigators have not reported any evidence of shots being fired at officers before they responded, though the initial call referenced possible gunfire in the vicinity. The area surrounding Cherry Lane remained blocked off for several hours as officials processed the scene.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has taken the lead in the case, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings. Agents from BCI are reviewing body-worn camera footage, collecting physical evidence, and interviewing witnesses to determine exactly what transpired.

Neighbors reported hearing multiple loud bangs shortly before police arrived. Some described the elderly man as a longtime resident who generally kept to himself. Others expressed shock that a violent confrontation had occurred in what is normally a quiet, suburban neighborhood.

Findlay Police Chief and city officials released statements expressing condolences to those affected and assuring the public that the investigation will be thorough and transparent. They noted that all involved officers have been placed on standard administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Officials also confirmed that counseling services are being made available to the officers involved, as well as to any community members impacted by the event. City leaders urged residents to remain patient while the investigation continues, emphasizing that accurate information will be released as it becomes available.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation will submit its findings to the Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office once the review is complete. Authorities expect that additional details — including body camera footage — will be made public following standard investigative procedures. The community of Findlay remains shaken as residents await answers surrounding the deadly confrontation.
