A Florida man allegedly killed his wife after an argument about a cruise and told police he would rather “live in prison than deal with her.”
William Simmons, 80, called police and confessed to killing his 83-year-old wife, Nancy, on February 21, according to an affidavit seen by The Independent.
Officers arrived at the residence after receiving a call from Simmons in which he told dispatch that his wife “was down, and I’m just sitting here” and that she “was not able to talk to anybody anymore.”
Deputies found Nancy unresponsive in the kitchen with a gunshot wound to her upper body next to a shotgun and an empty shell casing. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the affidavit.
Simmons confessed to her killing and said they had been arguing over “going on a cruise” when the incident had occurred. His wife had told him “f*** you, you bastard,” multiple times, which he told investigators had triggered him.

After retrieving the gun from his bedroom closet, he told his wife he had “had enough and he could pull the trigger,” the report stated. After she swore at him again, he allegedly shot her once.
Simmons later told police that his wife suffered from dementia and that he had dealt with it “for too long,” as well as stating that “he loved the old Nancy and that he would rather live in prison than deal with her.”
Simmons reportedly told officers that his wife had not tried to hurt him during the incident, that he was not under the influence and that it was not an act of self-defense. He was charged with first-degree murder.
The Independent has attempted to contact the Orange County Sheriff’s Office for further information about the case.
