GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA — Remembering David Mather Whitehead Sr., 58, of High Point, NC, Killed in Tragic I-385 Crash

GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA —  The Whitehead family and the greater communities of High Point, North Carolina, and Greenville, South Carolina are in mourning after the tragic death of David Mather Whitehead Sr., who lost his life in a devastating crash on Interstate 385 in Greenville County.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the fatal collision occurred during the early morning hours when traffic was already beginning to swell along the busy interstate. The incident took place on I-385 Southbound, near mile marker 36, and involved multiple vehicles. David Mather Whitehead Sr., 58, was behind the wheel of a pickup truck when, for reasons still under investigation, he was involved in a violent crash that claimed his life at the scene.

Emergency responders rushed to the area and attempted life-saving measures, but tragically, Whitehead succumbed to his injuries before he could be transported to a hospital. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office later confirmed his identity and informed his family in North Carolina.

A Life of Quiet Strength and Dedication

David Mather Whitehead Sr. was known as a man of integrity, resilience, and deep commitment to his family. A longtime resident of High Point, he was a dedicated husband, loving father, and a proud grandfather whose life revolved around providing for and protecting those he loved.

Professionally, David worked for many years in logistics and transportation—a field where he earned the respect of his colleagues for his work ethic, reliability, and calm under pressure. Those close to him recall a man who approached life with patience and humility, always more interested in listening than speaking and quick to lend a helping hand.

“He was the type of person who would pull over to help a stranger on the side of the road,” said one close family friend. “He lived with compassion and gave his best to every person he met.”

David also had a love for the outdoors. When not working, he could often be found tending his garden, taking long weekend drives, or spending quiet afternoons fishing with his grandchildren—moments he cherished deeply.

A Family Shattered by Loss

The suddenness of David’s passing has devastated those who knew and loved him. He leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Linda Whitehead, two children—David Jr. and Rebecca—and four young grandchildren who adored their “Pawpaw.” His extended family, church community, and close-knit circle of lifelong friends are all struggling to come to terms with the loss of a man whose presence anchored so many lives.

“This wasn’t just a car accident. This was the loss of the heart of our family,” said his daughter, Rebecca. “We are heartbroken and still in disbelief.”

Ongoing Investigation

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash, working in conjunction with local authorities and crash reconstruction specialists. Preliminary findings have not yet been released, and it remains unclear whether weather, mechanical failure, or another driver’s actions played a role in the collision. No other serious injuries were reported from the crash.

Officials are urging any witnesses or motorists who may have dashcam footage or relevant information from the time of the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation. Public cooperation may help bring clarity and closure to a grieving family.

A Call for Road Safety

David’s tragic death on I-385 is yet another stark reminder of how fleeting life can be and how crucial it is for all drivers to remain vigilant on the road. In the wake of the crash, advocates and loved ones are reminding the public of the importance of defensive driving, restfulness behind the wheel, and slowing down—especially during high-traffic hours on major interstates.

Final Farewell

A memorial service to celebrate David’s life will be held later this week in High Point, with details forthcoming. The Whitehead family is inviting all who knew David to attend, share stories, and help honor the man who brought so much love, laughter, and steady strength into their lives.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in David’s name to local road safety initiatives or the American Heart Association, two causes close to his heart.

As the community reflects on the life of David Mather Whitehead Sr., we are reminded that even in the face of sudden loss, the memory of a good man never fades. His legacy lives on in the kindness he showed, the lives he uplifted, and the family that carries forward his enduring love.

Rest in peace, David. Your journey ended too soon, but your impact will last forever. 🕊️
