Harrisburg, Pa.: Vehicle Strikes Kipona Festival Attendees, Injures Two, Police Investigate Downtown Riverfront Incident

HARRISBURG, Pa. — A chaotic scene unfolded in downtown Harrisburg on Monday evening after a vehicle struck festival attendees at the Kipona Festival, leaving two people injured and prompting a swift police response. Authorities cordoned off portions of the riverfront to secure the area and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The incident occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m., just as the three-day festival’s festivities were concluding. Witnesses reported a red van traveling down South Front Street, where festival vendors were set up, striking multiple people along the crowded route.

Festivalgoers described the scene as chaotic and terrifying, with individuals running for cover and screaming as the vehicle moved through the area. Several witnesses reported the driver repeatedly honking the horn while accelerating, creating panic among attendees.

Emergency crews responded promptly after Dauphin County dispatchers received calls reporting the incident. Officers arrived at the intersection of North Front Street and South Street to secure the scene and assist victims. Two individuals were confirmed injured and received medical attention at a nearby hospital.

The vehicle, a red van, sustained visible damage to its front bumper and hood and was located near Cranberry and Front Streets. Crime scene tape was placed around the vehicle while investigators conducted a detailed examination.

Harrisburg Police Commissioner Thomas Carter and Mayor Wanda Williams were both present at the scene as authorities worked to restore order and ensure public safety. Officials reassured the community that all necessary measures were being taken to secure the area.

Police closed Front Street between the 100 block of State Street and the pedestrian bridge leading to City Island to allow investigators to process evidence and reconstruct the events. The closure caused temporary disruption to traffic and public access near the festival grounds.

The Harrisburg Police Department has assumed the lead role in the investigation. Officers are collecting witness statements, reviewing surveillance footage, and examining the vehicle to determine the driver’s actions and potential intent.

At this time, details regarding the driver’s motive remain unclear, and authorities have not confirmed whether any charges have been filed. Investigators continue to gather information and work with emergency responders to ensure the safety of the public.

Residents and festival attendees are urged to remain alert and report any relevant information to the Harrisburg Police Department. Officials emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and pledged to provide updates as more verified information becomes available.
