On Monday, July 21, 2025, a disturbing incident unfolded at ABC Daycare & Kindergarten located at 610 Columbiana Road in Homewood, Alabama. Tamara Sasha Hughes, a 28-year-old daycare worker from Hoover, has been charged with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle following a violent altercation with a parent.
The incident began around 9:20 a.m. when a parent and her sister arrived at the daycare to drop off a child, reportedly past the designated drop-off time. According to Homewood Police Sergeant Mark Trippe, this led to a verbal dispute between the parent, her sister, and Hughes. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation, with a daycare administrator reporting that the parent punched Hughes in the face, causing significant injury. Other staff members intervened to break up the fight.
After the altercation, the parent, her sister, and the child left the daycare in their vehicle, heading west on Carr Avenue toward Greensprings Highway. Witnesses state that Hughes got into her own vehicle, followed the family, and fired multiple shots at their car just a block away from the daycare. One bullet struck a tire on the parent’s vehicle, but fortunately, no one was injured in the shooting.
Homewood Police responded promptly to reports of gunshots near the daycare, arriving at the scene around 9:30 a.m. Detectives and crime scene investigators recovered a bullet from the tire of the victim’s vehicle. Hughes was taken into custody for questioning at police headquarters and was later formally charged. She was booked into Jefferson County Jail at 10:37 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, and is being held on a total bond of $30,000.
ABC Daycare Director Juanita Sparks addressed the incident, noting that it was an isolated event and that the daycare remains committed to the safety and care of its children. Some parents, including a mother named Ms. Wells, expressed continued trust in the daycare, emphasizing the quality of care provided to their children. Sparks also indicated that other daycare workers involved in the altercation may press charges against the parent and her sister, whom they claim initiated the physical confrontation.
The Homewood Police Department continues to investigate the incident, and no additional injuries or arrests have been reported at this time. The event has shocked the local community, raising concerns about safety and conflict resolution in childcare settings.
