Hospital Hero Killed Protecting Others in Enid Shooting; Suspect Fatally Shot by Police

Spread the News with People

In the quiet city of Enid, Oklahoma, a night of routine turned into a harrowing tragedy on August 17, 2025, when a domestic dispute spiraled into a deadly officer-involved shooting at Integris Health Enid Hospital. The incident, which unfolded just before 11:00 p.m., claimed the lives of two men: a beloved hospital security officer and the suspect who brought chaos to the medical facility. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is now piecing together the events of that fateful night, as a community mourns a hero and grapples with the aftermath.

The chaos began with a call to the Enid Police Department, reporting a domestic disturbance near East Walnut Avenue and North 12th Street, a stone’s throw from the hospital. Officers arrived swiftly, identifying 46-year-old Dedrick Max Bloss as the suspect. Neighbors later shared with local media that turmoil was not uncommon at Bloss’s residence, with one resident, Jakota Copeland, describing the shock of hearing gunshots echo through the night. “We heard everything going on last night, all the way from Bass to here,” Copeland told News 9, painting a picture of a neighborhood rattled by the escalating violence.

Minutes after the initial call, police tracked Bloss’s vehicle to the parking lot of Integris Health Enid Hospital, located near West Owen K. Garriott Road and South Van Buren Street. What happened next was a rapid descent into chaos. As officers approached Bloss, he opened fire, striking at least one police vehicle before fleeing into the hospital. Inside, the situation grew dire. Bloss, armed and unrestrained, discharged multiple rounds, turning a place of healing into a scene of terror.

Amid the gunfire, 72-year-old public safety officer J.W. “Jim” Bode confronted the gunman. A retired probation and parole officer with five years of service at Integris, Bode was a pillar of the Enid community—a father of three, a doting grandfather, and a martial arts master known for his discipline and generosity. Described by the hospital as a “colleague and friend,” Bode bravely placed himself in harm’s way to protect patients, staff, and visitors. Tragically, he was struck by Bloss’s gunfire and, despite emergency efforts, succumbed to his injuries.

Enid police, undeterred by the danger, pursued Bloss into the hospital. In a tense exchange of gunfire, officers neutralized the threat, fatally shooting Bloss. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Miraculously, no patients, medical staff, or law enforcement officers were harmed, a fact that OSBI Public Information Officer Hunter McKee emphasized with gratitude. “This could have been a lot worse,” McKee told reporters. “We’re fortunate officers ended the threat as quickly as they did.”

Integris Health Enid Hospital issued a heartfelt statement, mourning the loss of Bode, who “valiantly put himself in harm’s way to save others.” The hospital praised his dedication, noting his lifelong commitment to service and safety. “His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten,” the statement read, extending condolences to Bode’s family and gratitude to the law enforcement agencies that secured the facility. Counseling and chaplain services have been made available to support the hospital’s staff, who are reeling from the loss of their colleague.

The Enid community has rallied to honor Bode’s memory. Known for his involvement in the local martial arts scene, Bode was celebrated as an extraordinary practitioner and teacher whose “precision and power” left a lasting impact. “He set a standard of excellence for all who trained with him,” a tribute from the martial arts community shared with KFOR read, underscoring the depth of his influence.

As the OSBI continues its investigation, questions linger about Bloss’s motives and the events leading up to the shooting. Authorities have not yet released details about the domestic dispute that sparked the chain of events or the nature of Bloss’s actions at the hospital. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure as the investigation unfolds.

Integris Health Enid Hospital, briefly closed in the immediate aftermath, has since reopened, its staff and patients resuming their work under the shadow of loss. The swift response of the Enid Police Department, alongside support from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and other agencies, ensured the hospital was secured and the public safe. Yet, the scars of that night remain, as Enid mourns a hero whose courage defined his final moments.

The investigation, led by the OSBI, is ongoing, with officials promising updates as new information emerges. For now, the city holds tight to the memory of J.W. Bode, a man who gave everything to protect others, and a community united in grief and gratitude.
