With broken hearts and immense sorrow, the community of Fernie, BC mourns the tragic and untimely loss of Derek James Ross — a beloved son, friend, and devoted father of three beautiful children: Broly (8), Ruby (7), and JJ (3). Derek was just 33 years old when his life was suddenly cut short on July 11, 2025, while out for a motorcycle ride with his best friend. He never made it home that day to the family who loved him more than words could ever express.
Born on February 29, 1992, Derek was a leap-year baby with a spirit as rare and special as his birthday. He was known by those closest to him as a hardworking, selfless man — the kind of person who would do absolutely anything to support and provide for his family. Everything he did, every choice he made, was guided by love for his children. His world revolved around Broly, Ruby, and JJ. Whether it was a warm hug, a laugh shared during playtime, or late nights spent working to make ends meet, Derek’s devotion to his family never wavered.
To know Derek was to know someone who carried the weight of responsibility with quiet strength and grace. He faced life’s challenges head-on and never gave up, no matter how hard things got. He was a friend you could count on, a father who loved fiercely, and a soul that made the world a little brighter for those lucky enough to know him.
The circumstances of his passing are a painful reminder of how fragile and unpredictable life can be. What began as a simple ride with a friend ended in tragedy, and now his loved ones are left trying to pick up the pieces.
In the wake of this devastating loss, Derek’s family is now facing both emotional and financial hardship. Funeral expenses and the ongoing support of his young children have become immediate concerns, and they are in desperate need of help from the community that Derek called home.
