In Loving Memory of Kevin Bushnell: A Cherished Son, Teammate, and Friend to Many
Illinois Baseball Community Mourns the Sudden Loss of a True Diamond Gem

ILLINOIS —  With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Kevin Bushnell, a proud son of Illinois and a deeply respected member of the local and regional baseball community. His sudden departure has left a void that words can scarcely express—a silence where once there was laughter, dedication, and the fierce crack of a bat meeting ball. Kevin was not just a player; he was a force of spirit, a beacon of teamwork, and a friend to all who had the privilege of sharing space with him.

From a young age, Kevin’s love for the game was unmistakable. He could often be found at the local ballpark—first as a wide-eyed kid gripping a glove twice the size of his hand, and later as a formidable athlete with natural talent, tireless work ethic, and deep humility. Coaches described him as “a coach’s dream,” someone who gave 110% whether it was practice, a championship game, or helping younger teammates master their swing.

Throughout his years on the diamond, Kevin earned a reputation not just for his athletic prowess, but for his leadership, kindness, and unwavering integrity. He played with passion and discipline, always putting the team before himself. Whether he was hitting in the clutch, taking the mound in a pressure situation, or cheering from the dugout, Kevin exemplified what it means to be a teammate.

But Kevin’s story reached far beyond baseball. Off the field, he was a devoted son, loving brother, loyal friend, and genuine soul who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He had a quick wit, a warm smile, and a heart that beat for others. He volunteered at local schools and youth leagues, never hesitating to lend a hand to a young player dreaming of following in his footsteps.

“Kevin didn’t just play the game—he lived it, and he loved it. But more importantly, he loved people,” said one of his former coaches. “He inspired every single person in that locker room.”

The news of Kevin’s passing has sent shockwaves throughout Illinois and beyond, where teammates past and present, fellow athletes, family friends, and coaches are coming together to mourn, reflect, and remember. Tributes have poured in on social media, many using the hashtag #PlayForKevin, with players dedicating their games and practices to the memory of a teammate gone too soon.

“He was one of the good ones,” wrote a fellow player. “I was lucky to know him, luckier to call him a friend. He left it all on the field—and in life.”

Kevin’s parents, siblings, and loved ones are leaning on one another and the vast network of friends and supporters who are helping them carry the weight of this enormous loss. In a public statement, the Bushnell family expressed both gratitude and heartbreak:

“Kevin brought joy, light, and purpose to our lives every day. His smile, his laughter, and his love for life will stay with us always. We are heartbroken beyond words, but deeply thankful for the outpouring of support from this incredible community.”

In honor of Kevin’s memory, a candlelight vigil will be held this week at his high school baseball field, where teammates, classmates, coaches, and community members will gather to celebrate his life and legacy. Plans are also underway to establish a memorial scholarship in Kevin’s name, aimed at supporting young athletes who embody the same spirit of sportsmanship and dedication that defined his life.

Though Kevin Bushnell’s time with us has been tragically cut short, his impact is everlasting. He will be remembered not only for what he accomplished on the field, but for how he made others feel—seen, supported, and inspired.

Rest easy, Kevin. The game won’t be the same without you—but we will carry your number in our hearts, your name on our jerseys, and your memory in every swing, every cheer, and every inning.
