Spread the love

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Mrs. Mona Vice, Chairperson of the Nicholas County Board of Education, whose unwavering dedication to the students, families, and educators of Nicholas County has left a legacy that will echo for generations.

For three decades, Mrs. Vice poured her heart into public education, serving tirelessly to uplift our schools and strengthen our community. For 28 of those 30 years, she held the position of Chairperson—a role she embraced not for recognition, but out of a deep and abiding commitment to doing what was right for students. She led with compassion, integrity, and the unshakable belief that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed.

A proud graduate of Nicholas County High School, Class of 1976, Mona knew firsthand the value of a strong public education. Her love for the district ran deep, and her decisions were always guided by what would benefit students the most. Whether advocating for improved facilities, supporting safety measures, or advancing programs that helped raise graduation rates and expand college and career readiness, Mrs. Vice worked tirelessly to ensure that our schools were places where students could learn, grow, and thrive.

She celebrated every student’s victory, from the classroom to the athletic field, cheering for the Bluejackets with pride and joy. Her presence was not only felt in the boardroom, where critical district-wide decisions were made, but also in the stands, at community events, and in the quiet moments where she offered a listening ear and thoughtful guidance to teachers, staff, and families.

Under her steady leadership, Nicholas County Schools weathered challenges and embraced opportunities. Through budgetary diligence and strategic planning, Mrs. Vice helped maintain financial stability while continuing to invest in the future of our schools. Her vision and persistence led to countless improvements that will benefit students for years to come.

Beyond her professional service, Mona Vice was a deeply respected and beloved figure in our community. She was a mentor to many, a champion for equity, and a steadfast friend. Her humility, grace, and dedication will be dearly missed, but her spirit will continue to guide the work of the Nicholas County Board of Education and the entire school district.

As we mourn this immense loss, we also celebrate the extraordinary life of a woman who gave so much to others. Our thoughts, prayers, and heartfelt condolences are with Mrs. Vice’s family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.

May her memory be a blessing, and may her legacy of service, strength, and love live on in every student who walks through the halls of Nicholas County Schools.

Thank you, Mrs. Mona Vice. Your work was a gift to us all.
