It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic loss of Ron Walters, who passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, humor, and quiet strength. Ron was a man of many roles — a husband, a mentor, a behavioral consultant, a juvenile probation officer, and, most recently, a self-employed Garden Vole Wrangler — but above all, he was a man deeply committed to the well-being of others, both human and animal.

Born and raised in the small town of Terry, Montana, Ron carried the grounded spirit of the prairie with him wherever life led. He graduated from Terry High School before pursuing a degree in Social Science at College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University, where he began shaping his life’s mission: to help others through service, guidance, and a deep understanding of human nature.

Ron spent many years serving the youth of Montana, first as a Juvenile Probation Officer for the State of Montana, where he helped countless troubled young people find their footing again. He believed in second chances and saw potential in those the world too often overlooked. Later, as a Behavior Consultant at Bitterroot Valley Education Cooperative, he worked tirelessly alongside educators and families to build supportive environments for children with behavioral and emotional challenges. He approached every case not with judgment, but with empathy, always believing that kindness could go where punishment could not.

In his later years, Ron embraced a quieter — yet no less meaningful — path. Relocating to Norwich, Connecticut, he began a unique and humble venture as a Garden Vole Wrangler, helping local gardeners and nature lovers live in harmony with their land. What others might have dismissed as trivial, Ron treated with reverence. Every creature, every plant, every patch of soil mattered. He believed in protecting the balance of life, even in the smallest of spaces.

Ron was more than his work. He was a devoted husband, a loyal friend, a source of dry humor, and a man whose calm presence brought comfort to all who knew him. Whether he was counseling a teenager in crisis, advising a teacher through a difficult day, or kneeling in the dirt to track a vole’s path through the garden, Ron did it all with patience, integrity, and quiet purpose.

His passing is not only a personal loss to his family and close friends, but a loss to every life he touched through his quiet acts of service. In a world often too loud, Ron listened. In a world often too harsh, he was gentle. And in a world too quick to give up, he held on — to people, to hope, to nature.
