It is with deep sorrow that 346 (Tynemouth) Squadron announces the passing of Cadet Warrant Officer Matthew Adams, who has died following a courageous and unwavering battle with cancer.

CWO Adams joined the Squadron in 2019 as a bright, enthusiastic young Cadet, and from the very beginning, his commitment and passion set him apart. Whether it was drill, fieldcraft, sports, or leadership training, Matthew gave his all. He immersed himself fully into Squadron life, becoming not just a participant but an example to others—always first to volunteer, always eager to support his peers, and always striving for excellence.

In late 2022, Matthew was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. For many, such a diagnosis would have marked the end of active participation. But Matthew was not like many. He met this devastating news with the same courage and determination he brought to every challenge in his Cadet career. Against all odds—and often against medical advice—he continued to take part in Squadron activities, completing long-distance road marches and adventure training expeditions that would be considered demanding for even the healthiest of Cadets.

His extraordinary resilience and unbreakable spirit did not go unnoticed. In recognition of his character, courage, and unwavering commitment, Matthew was honoured with both a Commandant’s Commendation and the Squadron’s Brian Luke Award for Endeavour—two accolades that speak volumes about the kind of person he was: a leader, a fighter, and an inspiration.

To those of us in 346 Squadron, Matthew was more than just a Cadet. He was a cherished member of our family. His humour, his optimism, and his refusal to be defined by his illness inspired not just fellow Cadets, but the adult volunteers and staff who worked closely with him. His absence will leave a profound space—not just on our parade square, but in the hearts of everyone who had the honour of knowing him.

The Royal Air Force Air Cadets was a massive part of Matthew’s life, and we know that his impact ripples far beyond the walls of our Squadron. His story is one of bravery, perseverance, and heart—a legacy that will remain with us always.

A celebration of Matthew’s life will take place at Holy Saviour’s Church, Tynemouth, on Saturday, 7th June 2025, at 0945hrs. We warmly welcome any Cadets and Staff from Durham Northumberland Wing who knew Matthew and would like to attend. Those wishing to join us in saying farewell are asked to contact OC 346 Squadron through their appropriate chain of command.
