John Peters, a beloved and enduring voice in British radio, passed away in May 2025 at the age of 75, leaving behind a legacy that helped shape the soundscape of the East Midlands for over five decades. From his pioneering role in launching Radio Trent in the 1970s to his recent broadcasts on Boom Radio, Peters was a constant companion to generations of listeners, known for his warm voice, deep musical knowledge, and unwavering passion for the medium.

A Trailblazer in East Midlands Radio

Born in Ashford, Middlesex, in 1949 or 1950, John Peters began his journey into broadcasting in 1974 with the United Biscuits Network (UBN), a closed-circuit radio service for factory workers. His big break came in 1975 when he became the first voice on Nottingham’s Radio Trent, the East Midlands’ inaugural commercial radio station. Peters not only hosted the station’s launch but also became a staple of its programming, presenting popular shows like the “Trent Top 30,” which aired across Nottingham, Leicester, and Derby.

In 1988, following regulatory changes, Peters transitioned to GEM-AM, Radio Trent’s medium wave service, where he continued to captivate audiences with his engaging style and deep appreciation for classic hits. His tenure at GEM-AM solidified his status as a cherished figure in the region’s radio landscape.

A Versatile and Enduring Career

Peters’ adaptability and passion for radio saw him embrace various roles across multiple stations. In 2003, he joined Saga 106.6 FM, hosting the breakfast show and playing a pivotal role in the station’s success. When Saga transitioned to 106.6 Smooth Radio in 2007, Peters continued to delight listeners with his weekend and evening shows until 2010.

Beyond mainstream radio, Peters contributed to community stations like Gravity FM in Grantham and Radio2XS, demonstrating his commitment to connecting with audiences at all levels. His involvement in these platforms underscored his belief in the power of radio to bring communities together.

A Respected Voice on Boom Radio

In 2021, Peters joined Boom Radio, a station catering to the baby boomer generation, where he hosted several shows, including “The Friday Fandango,” “John’s Jukebox,” and “The Vintage Charts.” His programs, rich with nostalgia and musical insights, resonated deeply with listeners, reaffirming his status as a trusted and beloved broadcaster.

A Life Beyond the Microphone

Outside the studio, Peters was known for his love of classic cars and his hands-on approach to technology. He often spent time in his workshop, indulging in his passion for electronics and restoring vintage vehicles. This blend of technical acumen and artistic sensibility mirrored his approach to radio—meticulous, heartfelt, and always engaging.

Remembering a Radio Legend

John Peters’ passing marks the end of an era for East Midlands radio. His contributions not only entertained but also shaped the region’s broadcasting identity. Colleagues and listeners alike remember him as a consummate professional, a mentor, and a friend whose voice became a comforting presence in countless lives.

As tributes pour in, it’s clear that Peters’ impact extended far beyond the airwaves. He leaves behind a legacy of innovation, dedication, and a deep connection with his audience—a true testament to the enduring power of radio and the individuals who bring it to life.
