The Kalispell, Montana community is reeling from a tragic incident that unfolded on Mother’s Day, May 11, 2025. Authorities have confirmed that 33-year-old Nicholas Olson-Hartley fatally shot his wife, 27-year-old Katie Olson-Hartley, and their two children—a six-year-old daughter and a seven-month-old infant—before taking his own life in an apparent murder-suicide.

The Kalispell Police Department (KPD) responded to a mental health call at 127 Werner Peak Trail at 5:52 a.m. The call was made by Nicholas Olson-Hartley, who reportedly made several concerning statements before disconnecting. Upon arrival, officers were unable to make contact with anyone inside the residence. After observing evidence at the scene, they forced entry into the home. Inside, they discovered the bodies of Nicholas and Katie Olson-Hartley, both dead from apparent gunshot wounds. Further investigation revealed the couple’s two children, a six-year-old and a seven-month-old, also deceased from gunshot wounds.

Investigators believe that Nicholas Olson-Hartley killed his family before calling 911 and then took his own life.

The couple’s eldest child, Heidi Hartley-Olson, was a student at Edgerton Elementary School in Kalispell. Superintendent Matt Jensen described her as “kind, thoughtful, and a bright light at Edgerton,” noting that she will be deeply missed.

In the wake of this tragedy, the Kalispell Police Department has expressed condolences to the grieving family and community. They are also providing resources to support their officers as they process this devastating event.
