KENDALL COUNTY, Texas — A tragic crash on Interstate 10 Monday afternoon claimed the lives of 23-year-old Giselle Cristobal and two young boys, leaving a deep sense of grief across Kendall County. The fatal collision occurred just before 3:30 p.m. on the westbound lanes near Mile Marker 524, an area where traffic is typically steady with vehicles moving between San Antonio and Kerrville.
According to officials, the crash involved a 2018 Cascadia tractor-trailer and a 2013 GMC Sierra that had been stopped in the right lane of the highway. For reasons still under investigation, the tractor-trailer struck the stationary GMC with significant force, causing extensive damage and trapping the occupants inside the smaller vehicle. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, but the outcome was heartbreaking.
When first responders reached the wreckage, they found Giselle Cristobal and the two children inside the GMC. Despite the urgent efforts of paramedics, all three were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer, whose identity has not yet been released, remained at the location and cooperated with investigators. He was not reported to have sustained serious injuries.
Members of the Texas Department of Public Safety and Kendall County Sheriff’s Office immediately began working to piece together the chain of events that led to the deadly collision. Sections of Interstate 10 were closed for several hours as troopers conducted measurements, examined vehicle debris, and gathered witness statements. Traffic was diverted through nearby routes, causing significant delays well into the evening.
Authorities have not yet determined why the GMC Sierra was stopped in the travel lane or whether mechanical problems may have played a role. Investigators are also reviewing dashcam footage from nearby vehicles and surveillance cameras in the area to better understand how the accident unfolded. No charges have been filed, and officials have emphasized that their primary focus right now is on completing a thorough investigation.
The tragedy has deeply shaken the Kendall County community, with residents expressing sorrow and disbelief over the loss of such young lives. Social media posts from friends and family of the victims describe Giselle Cristobal as a caring and devoted young mother who loved her children dearly. Many have shared memories of her warmth, compassion, and determination to create a bright future for her family.
Local leaders have also extended condolences to those grieving. Several churches and community groups in the area are organizing prayer services and offering support for relatives and friends affected by the crash. Counselors have made themselves available to those struggling to cope with the sudden and profound loss.
Residents who travel Interstate 10 regularly say the stretch near Mile Marker 524 has seen heavy traffic and frequent construction in recent months, raising concerns about road safety and visibility. Some are urging state transportation officials to review conditions in that area to help prevent future tragedies.
