LAIE, HAWAIʻI — BYU–Hawaiʻi Mourns the Sudden Passing of Freshman Lachlan McQuivey

The Brigham Young University–Hawaiʻi community is in mourning following the unexpected death of freshman student Lachlan McQuivey, a promising young scholar from Massachusetts whose sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the university’s tight-knit campus in Lāʻie.

McQuivey, who had just begun his journey at BYU–Hawaiʻi, was widely known among his peers for his kindness, curiosity, and quiet strength. He was pursuing his studies with passion and had quickly made a mark in both his academic and social circles. Friends and faculty members alike remember him as someone with an infectious smile, a strong moral compass, and a deep desire to uplift those around him.

The university has not released details surrounding the cause of death, citing respect for the family’s privacy during this extremely difficult time. However, the news of McQuivey’s passing has prompted an outpouring of grief and support from across the campus and beyond.

In a heartfelt message sent to students, faculty, and staff, BYU–Hawaiʻi President John S. Tanner expressed his deep sorrow and extended condolences to the McQuivey family.

“Lachlan was a bright and caring young man who had just begun to share his light with the world and our campus. His loss is deeply felt by everyone who had the blessing of knowing him. We are united in mourning and in offering our prayers to his family during this tragic time.”

Grief counselors and campus ministry teams have been made available to students and staff in the wake of the tragedy, as the university works to support those most affected. Memorial services are expected to be planned in the coming days, and many students have already begun organizing vigils and remembrance events in McQuivey’s honor.

Among those sharing their memories are roommates and fellow students, many of whom described McQuivey as a loyal friend and compassionate listener. One classmate recalled, “Lachlan always took the time to ask how others were doing, even when he had a million things going on himself. He made people feel seen.”

A devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, McQuivey was known for his strong faith and dedication to living a life of service. Those who knew him best say that he lived with integrity and humility beyond his years.

In an emotional statement shared online, his family expressed their heartbreak, while also thanking the BYU–Hawaiʻi community for the outpouring of love and support.

“Lachlan was a light in our lives and the lives of many. We are devastated by his passing, but we are comforted by the many people who have reached out to share how he touched their lives. We ask for continued prayers and privacy as we navigate this unimaginable loss.”

As the community processes the grief of losing such a vibrant young life, many are holding on to the memories and impact McQuivey made in his short time on campus. His legacy, they say, will live on in the hearts of those he inspired.

The university continues to offer mental health resources for anyone struggling with the loss. Students are encouraged to reach out to the BYU–Hawaiʻi Counseling Services or speak with trusted faculty, mentors, or spiritual leaders during this time of mourning.

Lachlan McQuivey’s death is a sobering reminder of the fragility of life and the strength of community in the face of sorrow. As BYU–Hawaiʻi moves forward, it does so carrying the memory of a young man who exemplified the values of compassion, faith, and friendship.
