LIBERTY CITY, Texas — Authorities are investigating a tragic incident at Hugh Camp Memorial Park where 16-year-old Hailey Nicole Blake and her father, 49-year-old Shawn Glen Blake, were fatally shot Monday afternoon in what officials believe was a targeted attack.
Emergency services were dispatched to the park after reports of multiple gunshot victims. Deputies, Christus EMS personnel, and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers arrived quickly to provide assistance to the injured.
Upon arrival, responders discovered both Hailey Blake and her father unresponsive. Despite life-saving efforts at the scene, both were pronounced deceased. The community was left stunned by the sudden and violent loss of life.
Authorities confirmed a third individual, believed to be Hailey’s boyfriend, Christopher Wayne Hicks Jr., sustained apparent self-inflicted, life-threatening injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital where his condition remains critical.
The Gregg County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that this was not a random act of violence. Chief Deputy Craig Harrington stated, “It is believed this was a targeted attack, and no other injuries were reported beyond the three individuals involved.”
Two off-duty first responders who were present at the park provided immediate aid to the victims before emergency services arrived. Their swift actions helped stabilize the third individual but could not prevent the tragic deaths of Hailey and her father.
Hailey Blake was a student at Sabine High School, and the school district expressed deep sorrow over her loss. Officials announced additional support and counseling for students and staff, urging the community to keep the families in their thoughts and prayers.
The sheriff’s office is actively seeking information from witnesses and anyone who may have observed suspicious activity in or near the park at the time of the shooting. Investigators are also reviewing any available surveillance footage to piece together the events leading to the tragedy.
